A quiet bedroom with morning light through a window.

The short answer

Buy almost nothing. The two exceptions are bras in a larger band size, because your rib cage expands before your bump shows, and anything without a waistband, because early bloating makes ordinary waistbands unpleasant long before anything is visible. Tiredness and nausea are the dominant symptoms and no purchase fixes either.

What this trimester is actually like

Weeks 1 to 13, and the defining feature is that it is mostly invisible. MedlinePlus's material on common pregnancy symptoms and NHS guidance on tiredness in pregnancy both describe what dominates: exhaustion that is unlike ordinary tiredness, nausea that is not confined to the morning, sore breasts, and a constant need to urinate.

What you will not have yet: a bump that needs supporting, a back that hurts from carrying weight, or a sleeping position problem. Those are second and third trimester issues, and buying for them now is money sitting in a drawer.

The rib-cage thing nobody mentions

Breast changes are one of the earliest signs of pregnancy, and the part people miss is that it is not only cup size. The rib cage starts expanding early, which means your band size changes — and a band that is slightly too tight is uncomfortable in a way that is hard to place.

The practical answer is one or two wire-free, seamless, stretchy bras in a larger band size rather than a precise fitting you will outgrow. Do not spend much, because you will likely change again by the third trimester. The maternity bras page covers the choices, and maternity vs nursing bra covers whether to skip straight to nursing styles.

Clothes: the waistband problem comes first

Before anything shows, bloating makes waistbands uncomfortable. That is the first clothing problem of pregnancy and it is not a fit problem.

Two cheap answers. A belly band — a fabric tube over the waistband — lets you wear your own jeans unbuttoned, which buys you weeks or months. Over-belly leggings remove the waistband entirely and will still fit at 35 weeks.

What is too early: maternity jeans in a size guess, a maternity work wardrobe, anything bought for a bump you do not have. See when to start wearing maternity clothes.

Sleep: it is the exhaustion, not the position

First trimester sleep problems are usually the needing-to-urinate kind and the exhausted-but-awake kind rather than the cannot-get-comfortable kind. MedlinePlus has material on sleep disorders worth reading if it is severe.

If you are already uncomfortable, a wedge is the right first purchase — cheap, small, and useful alongside a bigger pillow later. A full-body pregnancy pillow is a second trimester purchase; buying one now means several months of it occupying your bed before it does anything. See how to sleep when pregnant and sleep positions by trimester.

How we scored these

Six axes: usefulness this trimester, usefulness later, comfort, whether it works at an early size, discretion and value. The compression socks score 6.0 on the first axis and 9.2 on the second, which is the honest answer rather than a soft one — they are a good product bought too soon for most people.

We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not used these. The method is on how we pick.

When to contact your provider

MedlinePlus's material on prenatal care is a good general reference, and these warrant a call rather than waiting for your next appointment:

  • Vaginal bleeding, or cramping with bleeding
  • Severe one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Vomiting so persistent you cannot keep fluids down — this is treatable and you should not endure it
  • Fever, or pain on passing urine
  • Fainting, severe dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain
  • Persistent low mood or anxiety — mental health in pregnancy matters as much as in the postpartum period

Top pick · The one thing worth buying now

8.6/10

Cake Maternity Cotton Candy Wirefree Nursing Bra

The genuine first-trimester purchase, and almost nobody expects it. Your rib cage starts expanding before your bump shows, so a band size that fit in week four can be uncomfortable by week ten. A wire-free seamless bra in a larger band tolerates that without a fitting.

Wires
Wire-free
Construction
Seamless, sleep-bra weight
Brand
Specialist maternity-bra label
Use
Sleep and lounge

What works

  • Accommodates rib-cage expansion without a precise fit
  • Wire-free, which matters when your ribs are sore
  • Comfortable enough to sleep in
  • Carries on being useful for nursing later

What it gives up

  • Not enough support for a larger bust
  • Minimal shaping
  • Will likely need replacing again by the third trimester
  • Specialist brand, so narrower stockists

Skip it ifyour current bras are still comfortable — this is not urgent.

Pick 2 · The other early purchase: no waistband

8.2/10

POSHDIVAH Maternity Leggings Pregnancy Yoga Pants

Bought for comfort rather than fit. Early pregnancy bloating makes ordinary waistbands genuinely unpleasant well before anything shows, and an over-belly panel removes the waistband entirely. These will still fit at 35 weeks, which is unusual value.

Panel
Over-belly, full coverage
Fabric
Brushed stretch knit
Pockets
No on the base style
Use
Everyday and lounge

What works

  • No waistband pressure at a point when bloating is the problem
  • Still fits at full term
  • Cheap
  • Comfortable enough to sleep and lounge in

What it gives up

  • The panel looks slack over a small bump
  • No pockets on the base style
  • Warm in summer
  • Dark colors only

Skip it ifyour own clothes are still comfortable.

Pick 3 · Early side-sleeping discomfort, cheaply

8.0/10

Hiccapop Pregnancy Wedge Pillow

The cheapest thing that helps with sleep, and the right first purchase rather than a full-body pillow. Nothing about the first trimester requires a pillow that occupies half the bed, and a wedge under the hip or behind the back is often all it takes.

Shape
Wedge
Support
Belly, back or under the hip
Bed footprint
Pocket-sized
Firmness
Two-sided, firm and soft

What works

  • Costs a fraction of a body pillow
  • Takes up almost no bed space
  • Two firmness sides, so you learn what you prefer
  • Still useful alongside a bigger pillow later

What it gives up

  • Not enough support once the bump has weight
  • Needs repositioning as you move
  • No head or knee support
  • Can feel too firm at first

Skip it ifyou are sleeping fine — it is early for this.

Pick 4 · Travel and long shifts, not general use

7.4/10

CHARMKING Compression Socks 15-20 mmHg 8 Pairs

Scored low on this page deliberately. Compression socks are genuinely useful in pregnancy and mostly from the second trimester onward, so for most people in the first trimester this is early. The exception is flying or a job on your feet, where they earn their place now.

Compression
15-20 mmHg
Pack
8 pairs
Height
Knee high
Use
Everyday, athletic, travel

What works

  • Eight pairs, so cost per pair is low
  • Right product for flights and long shifts
  • Becomes properly useful later
  • Mild 15-20 mmHg band needs no special fitting

What it gives up

  • Mostly too early in the first trimester
  • Standard calf cut does not suit everyone
  • Hard to put on when nauseous and tired
  • Not a dedicated maternity product

Skip it ifyou are not flying and not on your feet all day.

Questions people actually ask

What do I need in the first trimester?

Almost nothing. The two worthwhile purchases are bras in a larger band size, because your rib cage expands before your bump shows, and anything without a waistband, because early bloating makes waistbands uncomfortable.

Tiredness and nausea dominate this trimester and no purchase fixes either.

When should I buy maternity clothes?

Usually the second trimester for actual maternity clothes. In the first, a belly band over your own unbuttoned jeans and over-belly leggings cover the problem for very little.

Buying maternity jeans in the first trimester means guessing a size you cannot know yet.

Why do my bras not fit in early pregnancy?

Because your rib cage starts expanding early, so your band size changes and not just your cup size. A band that is slightly too tight is uncomfortable in a way that is hard to place.

One or two wire-free, seamless, stretchy bras in a larger band size is the answer, rather than a precise fitting you will outgrow.

Do I need a pregnancy pillow in the first trimester?

Usually not. First trimester sleep problems are the needing-to-urinate and exhausted-but-awake kind rather than the cannot-get-comfortable kind.

If you are already uncomfortable, a cheap wedge is the right first purchase. A full-body pillow is a second trimester item.

When should I call my provider in the first trimester?

Vaginal bleeding, severe one-sided abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, pain on passing urine, fainting or shoulder-tip pain all warrant a call rather than waiting.

So does vomiting so persistent you cannot keep fluids down — that is treatable and you should not endure it. And persistent low mood or anxiety.
