A neutral-toned bra folded on linen.

The short answer

Buy wireless, buy stretchy, and buy a clip-down style so the same bra works for nursing. Your rib cage expands before your cup size settles, which means band size changes first and a bra bought at 12 weeks is often wrong by 20. Two or three cheap ones beats one expensive one early; one good one is worth it around 36 weeks.

Why maternity bras are harder than they should be

Three things change, and not together.

Your rib cage expands. This is the one people do not expect. The lower ribs flare outward to make room, so band size increases — often by one or two sizes — before the cups change much. A bra that fits the cups and is tight across the back is the usual first symptom.

Your breasts grow, early and then again later. Often noticeably in the first trimester, then more gradually, then again sharply around the birth when milk comes in.

They get tender. Breast tenderness is listed among the common early symptoms of pregnancy, and it arrives before any size change does. In the first trimester, softness matters more than support.

So the practical approach is to buy for the stage you are in rather than trying to find one bra for all of it.

What to buy, and when

Buying by stage
StageWhat mattersBuy
Weeks 6-14Tenderness, not weightSoft wireless bralettes, one band size up
Weeks 14-30Weight and band sizeTwo or three stretchy wireless bras, clip-down
Weeks 30-36Comfort and heatBreathable, soft; replace anything tight across the back
From 36 weeksFit after the birthProper nursing bras — rib cage has mostly finished expanding

The 36-week point is the useful one: buy nursing bras then rather than at 20 weeks (when the band will be wrong) or after the birth (when you are judging fit while engorged). See when to buy nursing bras.

Wires: the honest position

There is no rule against underwires in pregnancy, and plenty of people wear them throughout. The practical case for wireless is that your shape is changing continuously, and a wire that fitted last month can end up sitting on breast tissue rather than in the root of the breast.

That is a fit problem rather than a wire problem, but because fit is a moving target in pregnancy, wireless is the lower-effort default. If you have a well-fitting underwired bra that is comfortable, there is no reason to abandon it.

Sizing: measure the band

If you take one thing from this page: measure your band, under the bust, snug but not tight. That is the number that changes first and the one letter sizing handles worst.

Above roughly a D cup, buy band-and-cup sizing rather than S/M/L. Letter-sized bras grade band and cup together in a fixed ratio, so at the edges you get a bra that is simultaneously too big and too small — which is a pattern-grading limitation rather than anything you are measuring wrong. We go through this in nursing bras for large breasts.

Do you need a maternity bra at all?

Honestly, not necessarily. What you need is a bra that fits the body you have now, and a soft wireless bra in the right size does that whether or not it is sold as maternity.

What maternity and nursing bras add is stretch built for a changing shape, and clip or wrap access for feeding. The second is the real reason to buy maternity rather than ordinary: a clip-down bra bought at 36 weeks saves you buying again in week two postpartum.

One case where maternity-specific genuinely matters: sports bras. ACOG and the NHS both encourage staying active in pregnancy, and a properly supportive bra makes more difference to whether exercise is comfortable than almost anything else. See maternity activewear.

How we picked

Six axes: support, tolerance of size change, genuine size range, fabric and breathability, comfort lying down, and whether it converts to nursing. Tolerance of size change is weighted heavily because it is what decides whether a bra bought in month four is still worn in month eight.

We read the current listings and the reported fit experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.

One thing to mention to your provider

Breast changes in pregnancy are normal and expected. A new lump, a persistently tender or red patch, skin dimpling or puckering, or discharge that is bloody are not things to attribute to pregnancy and wait out — mention them to your midwife, OB or GP. Pregnancy does not make those less worth checking.

Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.

Top pick · One bra for pregnancy and after

9.0/10

Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime Nursing Bra Wireless

The sensible single purchase, because it is a maternity bra that is also a nursing bra. Wireless but genuinely supportive, with band-and-cup sizing that goes well past a D rather than stopping at L, and enough stretch to tolerate the size changes ahead.

Pick 2 · Above a D cup

8.8/10

Cake Maternity Tutti Frutti Wire Free Nursing Bra for B-H Cups

Pregnancy frequently takes people a cup size or two beyond where they have ever shopped, and that is exactly where ordinary maternity bras run out. Cups through an H, wire free, engineered rather than scaled up, from a brand that only makes maternity bras.

What works

8.6/10

Kindred Bravely Essentials Crossover Nursing Bra Wire Free 2 Pack

The bra for the first trimester, when the dominant complaint is tenderness rather than weight. Soft, seamless, no clips, and stretchy enough that it still fits two sizes later. A two-pack is the right quantity thinking for something you will sleep in.

Pick 4 · Buying three without spending much

8.2/10

Momcozy YN21 Seamless Comfort Maternity Nursing Bra

The sensible budget option, and worth owning two or three of rather than one of something better — because whatever you buy at 16 weeks may not fit at 30, and spreading the risk is rational. Seamless, so nothing shows under a fitted top.

Pick 5 · A wide size range at a low price

8.0/10

Motherhood Maternity Cotton Spandex Wrap Front Nursing Sleep Bralette

A wrap-front cotton bralette from a dedicated maternity label, sized S to 3X. Cotton matters more in pregnancy than people expect, because stretched skin is often itchy and synthetic fabric makes that worse. No clips at all.

What it gives up

  • Light support

7.8/10

Hanes Maternity Nursing Bralette Moisture-Wicking

The cheapest here and the one with a feature that genuinely matters in warm weather: moisture-wicking fabric with odor protection. Pregnancy makes you sweat more, and a bra you are sweating into all day is one you want two of.

Questions people actually ask

What bras should you wear when pregnant?

Wireless, stretchy, and in a band size that fits the body you have now. Your rib cage expands before your cups settle, so band size is what changes first and tightness across the back is the usual first sign.

A clip-down style means the same bra works for nursing, which is the main reason to buy maternity rather than ordinary.

When should I buy maternity bras?

Buy soft wireless bralettes early, when tenderness rather than weight is the issue, then two or three stretchy wireless bras in the second trimester.

Buy proper nursing bras around 36 weeks, when your rib cage has mostly finished expanding — not at 20 weeks, and not after the birth while engorged.

Do I need a maternity bra, or will a normal bra do?

A soft wireless bra in the right size works whether or not it is sold as maternity. What maternity bras add is stretch built for a changing shape and clip or wrap access for feeding.

The access is the real reason to choose maternity: a clip-down bra bought at 36 weeks saves buying again in week two postpartum.

Should I avoid underwires during pregnancy?

There is no rule against them and many people wear them throughout. The practical case for wireless is that your shape changes continuously, so a wire that fitted last month can end up on breast tissue rather than in the root of the breast.

If you have a well-fitting underwired bra that is comfortable, there is no reason to abandon it.

How many maternity bras do I need?

Two or three for daytime, plus one or two soft ones to sleep in if tenderness is waking you. Buying several cheap ones early beats one expensive one, because sizes move.

Save the spending for around 36 weeks, when a bra bought then is likely to still fit after the birth.

What is the difference between a maternity bra and a nursing bra?

A maternity bra is built for a changing shape — stretchy, wireless, soft. A nursing bra adds access for feeding, usually clips or a wrap front.

Many bras are both, which is why buying a clip-down maternity bra is usually the efficient choice. We compare them directly in our maternity bra versus nursing bra guide.
