The short answer
Buy one straight-leg pair with real pockets in a fabric that holds its shape. Maternity trousers sit between leggings (which you will wear more) and tailoring (which you only need if your dress code requires it), and the pair that earns its place is the one that works for an appointment, a supermarket and a casual office without changing.
What this category is for
Leggings do most of the work in a pregnancy wardrobe, and office tailoring is only needed if you work somewhere that requires it. The everyday trouser is for the middle: the days you want to look like you got dressed without wearing anything with a waistband that fights you.
That makes versatility the deciding axis rather than any single property. A trouser that does one thing brilliantly and nothing else is a worse buy here than one that does four things adequately.
The three things that decide it
1. Fabric recovery
The same point as every maternity bottom: cheap stretch fabric has plenty of give on day one and has bagged at the knee and seat by the tenth wash. You will wear one or two pairs for several months, which is far more wear than a pair normally gets in that time, so recovery is where the money goes.
2. Pockets
Not a gimmick. Pregnancy involves carrying a phone, a water bottle and often a snack, frequently while carrying something else, and most maternity clothes have nowhere to put anything. A trouser with a pocket that holds a phone is a materially better garment.
3. Panel comfort seated
A trouser that is comfortable standing can be unpleasant after four hours in a chair: the panel edge digs in, the waist presses. If your days are mostly seated, weight this heavily — and note that it is the axis on which knit-waisted trousers beat suiting decisively.
Panel, briefly
Over-belly for support and a smooth line, warmer and visible under fitted tops. Under-belly for coolness and invisibility, slides down once the bump is heavy. Side panels for looking like ordinary trousers, least give late on.
For everyday trousers, over-belly is usually right — the comfort and stability matter more than discretion, because a longer top covers the panel anyway. Full argument in over-belly versus under-belly.
How many do you need?
One or two. Genuinely.
The realistic bottom-half wardrobe for most pregnancies is two pairs of leggings, one pair of jeans, and one or two everyday trousers, plus whatever your job specifically requires. People who overspend in pregnancy almost always overspent on bottoms, usually in one order, usually in a size that stopped fitting.
If you want more variety, dresses do more for the same money because they remove the waistband problem entirely.
How we picked
Six axes: panel comfort, fabric recovery, pockets, size and length range, versatility and value per wear. Versatility and recovery are weighted hardest, because this category exists to cover several situations and to be worn repeatedly.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.
Seasonal reality
Pregnancy makes you run hot, so a mid-weight trouser that was comfortable in March is unbearable in July. If your third trimester falls in summer, buy lighter than you normally would and accept that you will be in dresses more. If it falls in winter, a fleece-lined pair is a real quality-of-life purchase rather than an indulgence.
See what to wear when pregnant in summer for the seasonal version of the whole wardrobe question.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.

Pick 2 · A trouser that passes as tailoring

Pick 5 · Comfort above everything
8.0/10BLENCOT Maternity Work Pants Waffle Knit Wide Leg

Questions people actually ask
What are the best maternity pants for everyday wear?
A straight-leg pair with real pockets in a fabric that holds its shape. This category exists to cover several situations, so versatility matters more than any single property.
Over-belly panels are usually right for everyday trousers, because comfort and stability matter more than discretion when a longer top covers the panel anyway.
How many pairs of maternity pants do I need?
One or two, alongside two pairs of leggings and one pair of jeans. That is the realistic bottom-half wardrobe for most pregnancies.
People who overspend in pregnancy almost always overspend on bottoms, in one order, in a size that stops fitting.
Are maternity pants with pockets worth looking for?
Yes, and it is one of the few features where the marketing matches the experience. Pregnancy involves carrying a phone, water and often a snack, and most maternity clothes have nowhere to put anything.
A pocket that actually holds a phone makes a trouser meaningfully more useful.
What is the difference between maternity pants and maternity leggings?
Structure and fabric. Leggings are knit and close-fitting; maternity trousers have a trouser cut, a defined leg shape and usually a firmer fabric that holds its own shape.
Leggings get worn more days. Trousers are for the days you want to look like you got dressed.
Can I wear maternity pants after the birth?
Many people do for the first weeks, and an over-belly panel is genuinely comfortable over a tender abdomen or a c-section scar.
Side-panel styles are the ones most likely to keep being worn long-term, because they look like ordinary trousers once the panel is less obviously needed.
