The short answer
Buy one good pair and one cheap pair, not three cheap pairs. Leggings are the highest-mileage garment in a pregnancy wardrobe — you will wear them more days than everything else combined — and the two things that decide whether you still like them in month seven are fabric recovery and whether the waistband rolls down. Both are things you pay for.
Why leggings, specifically
Because they are the only garment that works across the entire range. A pair bought at 14 weeks still fits at 38 weeks, which is true of almost nothing else you can buy. They work for the sofa, the school run, a doctor's appointment and, in the flare cut, an office. And after the birth they are what you will live in while everything else is still wrong.
That is also why getting them right is worth more thought than getting jeans right: the jeans get worn twice a week, the leggings get worn five days out of seven.
The three things that go wrong
1. The waistband rolls down
The most common complaint in the category, and it is a construction problem. A thin over-belly panel pushed outward by a growing bump folds over at the top edge, and once it has started it does it every time you sit down. Ruched panels and thicker technical fabric resist it; cheap flat panels do not. A high rise helps because there is more fabric above the widest point of the bump.
2. They go sheer
Stretch plus wear plus washing thins the fabric, and it shows first across the seat and the knees. Light colors show it sooner. If you are buying one pair to wear out of the house, buy dark and buy denser fabric; if you are buying a multi-pack, assume at least one color will become indoor-only.
3. They bag at the knee
Fabric recovery again. Every legging bags a little by the end of a day; the question is whether a wash brings it back. Technical knits do. Cheap brushed fabric progressively does not, which is how a three-pack ends up as three pairs you only wear at home.
Pockets are not a gimmick
Worth saying plainly: pregnancy involves carrying a phone, a water bottle and often a snack, frequently while also carrying a toddler, and maternity clothes overwhelmingly have nowhere to put anything. A legging with a pocket that actually holds a phone is a meaningfully better garment, and it is one of the few features in this category where the marketing matches the experience. Our pick for leggings with pockets specifically goes into it further.
How we picked
Six axes: whether the waistband stays up, fabric recovery, opacity, pockets, size range and value per wear. Recovery and the waistband are weighted hardest because they are what the reported complaints are overwhelmingly about. We read the current listings and the recurring patterns rather than wearing anything — the method is on how we pick.
Over-belly or under-belly for leggings?
Almost always over-belly. The calculation is different from jeans: a legging has no structure to hold an under-belly waistband in place, so it slides far more readily, and the thin stretch fabric of an over-belly panel is far less hot than a denim one. Under-belly leggings exist and have their advocates, mostly in high summer. Start over-belly.
The one honest exception is a tender abdomen after a caesarean, where a waistband sitting on the incision hurts — and there, high over-belly is better again, because it clears the scar entirely. That is covered in postpartum compression leggings.
Can you exercise in them?
For walking and low-impact work, yes. ACOG and the NHS both encourage staying active in pregnancy within what your own provider has advised, and leggings are the usual garment for it. For anything with impact you will want a technical fabric rather than a brushed one, and a proper support bra matters considerably more than the leggings do. See maternity activewear.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · The pair you wear until they wear out
9.0/10CRZ YOGA Maternity Leggings with Pockets 25 Inch
Technical athletic fabric rather than a cheap brushed knit, which is the single biggest difference you can feel and the reason these do not go sheer or bag at the knee the way budget leggings do. Over-belly panel, real side pockets, defined inseam. The most expensive here and the best cost per wear.
- Panel
- Over-belly
- Inseam
- 25 in
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Fabric
- Technical athletic knit
What works
- Technical knit — holds opacity and shape far longer than brushed fabric
- Real side pockets that hold a phone
- Stated 25 inch inseam rather than a guess
- Over-belly panel that does not roll easily
What it gives up
- Highest price here
- Athletic look rather than a soft-lounge one
- Fewer colors than the fashion brands
- Technical fabric is warmer than cotton in high summer
Skip it ifyou want several pairs for the price of one.

Pick 2 · Several pairs without buying junk
8.7/10VALANDY Creamlush Maternity Leggings with Pockets Over the Belly
The sweet spot between the technical pair above and the cheap multi-packs below. The ruched over-belly panel grows with the bump rather than stretching flat, there are real pockets, and buying a two-pack is a sensible way to have a clean pair while one is in the wash.
- Panel
- Over-belly, ruched
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Pack
- 2 and 4 packs
- Size range
- S to 2XL
What works
- Ruched panel accommodates growth without stretching thin
- Side pockets
- Two and four packs available
- Sizes S to 2XL
What it gives up
- Brushed knit rather than technical, so recovery is mid-range
- Ruching is visible under very fitted tops
- Opacity varies between colors
- Not as durable as the technical pair
Skip it ifyou need one pair to survive six months of near-daily wear.

Pick 3 · Leggings you can wear somewhere
8.5/10POSHDIVAH Maternity Flare Leggings with Pockets
The flare leg is the reason this is here: it is the one legging cut you can wear to an office, a dinner or a parents' evening without it reading as activewear. Same over-belly panel and pockets as a standard pair, with a hem that changes what the garment is for.
- Panel
- Over-belly
- Leg
- Flare
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Use
- Dresses up more easily than a skinny legging
What works
- Flare leg dresses up in a way skinny leggings cannot
- Over-belly panel with full coverage
- Side pockets
- Balances the bump visually
What it gives up
- Flared hems drag in wet weather
- Does not work under boots
- More fabric, so warmer
- Less practical for actual exercise
Skip it ifyou want one pair that does both the gym and the sofa.

Pick 4 · Being pregnant through a winter
8.3/10G4Free BareFeel Fleece Lined Maternity Leggings with Pockets
A genuinely different category rather than a variant: fleece lining turns leggings into the only bottom half you want in January, and being pregnant means being outdoors in weather you would previously have driven through. Too warm for anything but cold months, which is the whole point.
- Panel
- Over-belly
- Lining
- Fleece
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Season
- Winter
What works
- Fleece lining is a real temperature difference, not a marketing one
- Over-belly panel with pockets
- Removes the need for tights under a dress
- Thick enough to be fully opaque
What it gives up
- Unwearable indoors in a heated building
- Bulkier under clothes
- Fleece pills over a season
- Useless for three quarters of the year
Skip it ifyour third trimester is in summer.

Pick 5 · Hot sleepers and sensitive skin
8.1/10Joyaria Cotton Maternity Leggings Over The Belly
Cotton rather than polyester, which matters if you are pregnant through a warm stretch or if synthetic fabric against a stretched abdomen makes you itch — a more common complaint than the category admits. Cooler and kinder, with less recovery than a technical knit.
- Panel
- Over-belly
- Fabric
- Cotton-rich
- Use
- Hot sleepers, sensitive skin
- Rise
- High
What works
- Cotton-rich, noticeably cooler against skin
- Better for itchy, stretched skin than polyester
- High rise with full bump coverage
- Breathable enough to sleep in
What it gives up
- Cotton stretches out through the day and needs a wash to recover
- No pockets on the base style
- Thinner than fleece or technical knit
- Shows every mark
Skip it ifyou want leggings that hold their shape from morning to night without sagging.

Pick 6 · The lowest cost per pair
7.7/10GROTEEN Maternity Leggings with Pockets Over Belly 3 Pack
Three pairs with pockets for the price of one technical pair, which is a real argument when you are washing leggings constantly and want a clean pair every morning. Judge them as consumables rather than as garments that will last: the recovery is where the cost has come out.
- Panel
- Over-belly
- Pack
- 3 pairs
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Value
- Lowest cost per pair in this set
What works
- Three pairs, so there is always a clean one
- Pockets on all three
- Over-belly panel
- Lowest cost per pair here by a distance
What it gives up
- Fabric recovery is the obvious compromise — expect bagging
- Opacity varies by color; check before wearing light shades out
- Panels are thinner and roll more easily
- Will not last a second pregnancy
Skip it ifyou would rather own one pair you like than three you tolerate — the cost per wear is closer than it looks.
| Waistband stays up | 7.4 |
|---|---|
| Fabric recovery | 6.6 |
| Opacity | 7.4 |
| Pockets | 8.4 |
| Size range | 8.0 |
| Value per wear | 8.2 |

Questions people actually ask
Are maternity leggings worth it?
They are the one maternity purchase almost nobody regrets, because they fit across the whole range and get worn more days than everything else combined.
The caveat is that regular leggings a size up genuinely work for a while in early pregnancy — the difference shows once the bump needs the panel to go over it rather than under.
How many pairs do I need?
Two is the realistic minimum, because you will wear them most days and need a clean pair while one is in the wash. Three is comfortable.
Better to have one good pair and one cheap pair than three cheap pairs: the good one survives being worn out of the house, and the cheap ones become the indoor pairs anyway.
Why does my maternity legging waistband keep rolling down?
A thin over-belly panel being pushed outward by a growing bump folds at the top edge, and once it has started it repeats every time you sit down.
Ruched panels, thicker technical fabric and a higher rise all resist it. Sizing up usually makes it worse, not better.
Do maternity leggings go see-through?
Cheaper brushed fabrics do, across the seat and knees first, and light colors show it soonest. It is the main reason to buy dark if you want one pair for wearing out.
Technical knits hold opacity far longer, which is a large part of what the higher price buys.
Can I wear them after the birth?
Yes, and most people do. A high over-belly rise is particularly comfortable over a tender abdomen, and after a caesarean it clears the incision rather than sitting on it.
If you want something with actual compression for the early months, that is a separate category covered in our postpartum section.
