The short answer
Buy two pairs of true maternity scrub pants and two maternity tops, and keep a couple of long underscrubs for cold units. Sizing up in regular scrubs does not work: the pant has the same rise so it cuts across the bump, and the top is wide at the shoulders and still short at the front. Both of those are specifically what maternity cuts fix.
Why sized-up scrubs fail
It is worth being specific, because “just go up two sizes” is the advice everyone gets.
The pant. A regular scrub pant two sizes up is wider at the hip and thigh and has the same rise, so the waistband still sits across the bump. You end up either pulling it under the bump, where it slides down all shift, or over it, where it cuts in. A maternity knit waist is a different pattern, not a bigger one.
The top. Scrub tops are cut straight, so a bigger one is wider everywhere and barely longer at the front. Over a bump the front hem rides up and the shoulders swim. Maternity tops add front length specifically.
The pockets. Sizing up does not add pockets, and pocket count is one of the few specs on this page that directly affects your shift.
What a twelve-hour shift actually demands
This category is unusual in that the wearer is on their feet for a very long time, in a warm building, in a garment that goes through hot industrial washing repeatedly. That changes what matters.
- Comfort at hour ten, not hour one. A waistband that is fine in the morning and digging in by evening is the commonest complaint. Jogger cuts and knit waists win here.
- Washing durability. Hot washes destroy cheap elastic. A maternity scrub pant from a specialist brand survives a season of that; a budget pair often does not.
- Pockets. Scissors, tape, a phone, a pen, a badge, alcohol gel. Two pockets is not enough and five is not excessive.
- Temperature. Wards swing from cold to overheated, and pregnancy already makes you run hot. Layering with a thin underscrub beats a warmer top.
- Swollen ankles. By the third trimester, a tight cuff is a genuine problem by the end of a shift. That is a real argument against joggers late on, and the NHS lists swollen ankles among the ordinary features of pregnancy.
Dress codes, which decide this before anything else
Check your workplace policy before buying. Some units specify colors, some prohibit joggers or cargo pockets, and some require specific brands. There is no point optimizing for pocket count if the pant is not allowed.
It is also worth asking whether your employer provides or subsidizes maternity uniform — many do, and it is routinely not mentioned unless you ask.
How many do you need?
Two pants and two tops if you have laundry facilities and work a normal rota. Three of each if you work consecutive long shifts or cannot wash frequently.
Plus two or three long underscrubs, which are cheap and get worn more than you expect.
Buy in the second trimester rather than earlier. A maternity scrub pant bought at 14 weeks will be too large for two months and the knit waist will have relaxed by the time you need it most.
How we picked
Six axes: rise and bump room, pocket count, comfort over twelve hours, washing durability, size range and whether it looks professional. Washing durability is weighted higher than it would be for ordinary clothing, because industrial laundering is what separates scrubs that last from scrubs that do not.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these, and we have not worked a shift in them. The method is on how we pick.
Two things worth raising at work
Standing. ACOG and the NHS both encourage activity in pregnancy, but standing still for long periods is specifically harder than moving, and it is a known contributor to back pain and swelling. Whether your role can be adjusted — more seated tasks, more breaks — is a reasonable conversation to have.
Compression socks. If you are on your feet for twelve hours, these do more for how you feel at the end of a shift than any garment on this page. See compression socks for pregnancy.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · The core maternity scrub pant
8.9/10Med Couture Touch Maternity Scrub Pant Straight Leg
From an established scrubs label rather than a general clothing brand, which matters for a garment going through an industrial wash twice a week. True maternity knit waist, straight leg, and three pockets rather than the two you get on a sized-up pair.
- Panel
- Maternity knit waist
- Leg
- Straight
- Pockets
- Three
- Brand
- Established scrubs label
What works
- Genuine maternity waist cut for a bump, not a sized-up regular pant
- Established scrubs brand, so sizing and durability are predictable
- Three pockets
- Holds up to repeated hot washing
What it gives up
- Higher price than general-brand maternity scrubs
- Knit waist can roll late in pregnancy
- Limited color range per workplace code
- Straight leg is less forgiving than a jogger over 12 hours
Skip it ifyour unit allows joggers — those are more comfortable for a long shift.

Pick 2 · A twelve-hour shift on your feet
8.7/10Med Couture Touch Maternity Jogger Scrub Pants
The jogger cut is the comfort answer for a long shift, and the cuff means nothing drags on a floor you would rather not have fabric touching. Four pockets, same brand reliability.

- Pockets
- Four
- Use
- Long shifts on your feet
What works
- Most comfortable cut here over a long shift
- Cuffed ankle keeps fabric off the floor
- Four pockets
- Same durability as the straight-leg pant
What it gives up
- Not every workplace dress code allows joggers
- Cuff can feel tight if ankles swell
- Higher price
- Less formal look
Skip it ifyour dress code specifies a straight leg.

Pick 3 · Maximum pockets
8.5/10GLAMIX Maternity Scrub Pants Straight-Leg with 5 Pockets
Five pockets and side vents, which is the most carrying capacity here. In a job where you are holding scissors, tape, a phone, a pen and a badge, pocket count is not a trivial spec, and side vents help with the heat.
- Panel
- Maternity knit waist
- Pockets
- Five, plus side vents
- Leg
- Straight
- Fabric
- Stretch
What works
- Five pockets — the most here
- Side vents help with heat over a long shift
- Straight leg, dress-code safe
- Lower price than the specialist brands
What it gives up
- Less predictable sizing than the established scrubs labels
- Fabric thinner than Med Couture
- Pockets add bulk at the hip
- Durability through repeated hot washing is less proven
Skip it ifyou need the garment to survive two years of industrial washing.

Pick 4 · A top shaped for a bump rather than sized up
8.4/10Med Couture Touch Maternity Scrub Top V-Neck
The top is where sizing up fails most visibly: a regular scrub top two sizes large is wide at the shoulders and still short at the front over a bump. This is cut with extra front length and shaping, which is the whole point.
- Cut
- True maternity scrub top, V-neck
- Pockets
- Two
- Brand
- Established scrubs label
- Fit
- Shaped for a bump rather than sized up
What works
- Extra front length, so it stays covering the bump
- Shaped rather than sized up — fits the shoulders properly
- Two pockets
- Established brand, predictable sizing
What it gives up
- Higher price
- Limited colors per code
- Two pockets only
- V-neck depth is not adjustable
Skip it ifyou have found a longer regular top that works.

Pick 5 · Cold units and layering
8.2/10Locoowai Maternity Underscrub Tops Long Sleeve
The piece nobody mentions until they need it. Hospitals are cold, scrub tops are short-sleeved, and a long maternity underscrub covers the bump at the front where a regular one rides up. Multi-packs mean you always have a clean one.
- Type
- Long-sleeve underscrub layer
- Pack
- 3 and 4 packs
- Length
- Long enough to cover the bump
- Use
- Cold units and layering
What works
- Long enough to cover the bump under a scrub top
- Multi-packs, so laundry is not a daily problem
- Solves the cold-unit problem cheaply
- Thin enough not to add bulk
What it gives up
- No pockets
- Thin fabric wears through faster
- Adds a warm layer in summer
- Plain
Skip it ifyour unit is warm.

Pick 6 · Spending less, with enough pairs
7.9/10Neer Maternity Scrub Pants with 4 Pockets
The budget option, and a reasonable one if you are only going to need maternity scrubs for a few months: four pockets, cargo styling, available in multi-packs so there is always a clean pair. The compromise is in fabric and longevity.
- Panel
- Maternity knit waist
- Pockets
- Four, cargo style
- Pack
- Multi-packs available
- Price
- Budget tier
What works
- Lowest cost per pair here
- Four pockets
- Multi-packs, so laundry is manageable
- Fine for a few months of wear
What it gives up
- Fabric thinner than the specialist brands
- Less predictable sizing
- Will not survive long-term industrial washing
- Cargo styling not allowed everywhere
Skip it ifyou want scrubs that last beyond this pregnancy.

Questions people actually ask
Can I just size up in regular scrubs?
It does not work well. A regular pant two sizes up is wider at the hip and thigh with the same rise, so the waistband still sits across the bump, and a bigger top is wide at the shoulders and barely longer at the front.
Maternity cuts change the pattern rather than the size, which is specifically what fixes both problems.
How many maternity scrubs do I need?
Two pants and two tops if you have laundry facilities and work a normal rota. Three of each if you work consecutive long shifts.
Plus two or three long underscrubs, which are cheap, solve the cold-unit problem, and get worn more than people expect.
When should I buy maternity scrubs?
In the second trimester. A pair bought at 14 weeks is too large for two months, and the knit waist will have relaxed by the time you most need it.
Check your workplace dress code first, because colors, joggers and cargo pockets are all sometimes restricted.
Are jogger scrubs better for a long shift?
Usually yes for comfort, and the cuff keeps fabric off the floor. The caveat is swollen ankles: by the third trimester a tight cuff can be uncomfortable by the end of a shift.
Check whether your dress code allows joggers before buying, because plenty of units do not.
Does my employer have to provide maternity uniform?
Policies vary, and many employers do provide or subsidize maternity uniform without advertising it. It is worth asking rather than assuming.
It is also worth raising whether your role can be adjusted — standing still for long periods is specifically harder in pregnancy than moving.
