This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your midwife, OB or GP about your own symptoms. Severe or sudden pain, bleeding, a fever, or regular contractions before 37 weeks need a call to your provider now — before you buy anything.

Which kind is yours?
Hip pain in pregnancy splits cleanly in two.
- Worse at night or on waking — it is side-sleeping. Your weight loads one hip for hours, and stacked knees rotate your pelvis so the load concentrates rather than spreads. Fixed with a firm knee gap and belly support.
- Worse on stairs, getting out of a car, or dressing standing up — it is pelvic, and it is probably pelvic girdle pain rather than the hip joint itself. Fixed with movement changes, a pelvic belt and physiotherapy.
The night-time kind
Two mechanisms, and both have cheap fixes.
Direct loading. Your entire upper-body weight plus the bump rests on one hip for hours on a surface that is not that soft. MedlinePlus lists hip and back aches among the ordinary discomforts of pregnancy, and pregnancy also increases ligament laxity around the pelvis, so the joint tolerates sustained loading less well than it used to.
Rotation. With your knees stacked, your top leg falls forward, rotating the pelvis and twisting the lumbar spine. That asymmetry concentrates load on the hip rather than spreading it across the joint.
What helps, in order:
- Something firm between your knees. This is the big one. A folded blanket, a firm cushion or a bead-filled pillow. Firm is the operative word — a soft pillow compresses within a couple of hours and the gap is gone.
- Something under the bump, which reduces how much weight bears down through the hip.
- A softer surface. On a firm mattress, a topper can matter more than a pillow — the hip needs somewhere to sink slightly. On an already soft mattress it makes things worse by letting your pelvis sag out of line.
- Switching sides deliberately rather than staying on the painful one out of inertia.
The hardware is compared in pillows for hip pain.
The daytime kind
If it hurts on single-leg movements, the structure complaining is usually the pelvis rather than the hip joint, even though it feels like the hip. The RCOG's patient information on pelvic girdle pain is the relevant reading, and the practical advice is about how you move:
- Sit down to dress. Standing on one leg to put trousers on is the classic provocation.
- Take stairs one at a time, leading with the less painful leg.
- Keep your knees together getting in and out of a car and turning over in bed.
- Avoid standing on one leg generally, including leaning on one hip while you wait.
- Shorten your stride rather than pushing through a longer one.
- A narrow pelvic belt for the parts of the day involving walking.
- Pelvic health physiotherapy, which is the actual treatment. Ask for the referral early.
Things that help both
- Heat on the hip and lower back. Reasonable, and often more effective than people expect. Keep it off the bump.
- Staying active within what your provider advises. Swimming, excluding breaststroke if the pain is pelvic, is a common suggestion because the water takes the load.
- Not sitting for long stretches. Getting up every twenty or thirty minutes is free.
- Sensible shoes. Unsupportive flats and heels both change how your pelvis sits. Worth more than it sounds.
Will it go after the birth?
The night-time kind usually eases quickly once the bump is gone and you can lie how you like. The pelvic kind often improves substantially in the weeks after birth as ligament laxity reduces, but not always immediately.
If pelvic or hip pain is still limiting you weeks after the birth, ask your provider for a pelvic health physiotherapy referral rather than waiting it out. Treatment is effective and referrals take time.
When to get it looked at
Contact your midwife or OB rather than managing it yourself if you have:
- Pain severe enough that you cannot weight-bear
- Hip or back pain with a fever
- New weakness or numbness in the leg
- Pain with bleeding, or regular tightening before 37 weeks
- Severe one-sided calf pain, warmth or swelling — that needs urgent assessment
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · Night-time hip pain
8.7/10bbhugme Pregnancy Pillow with Adjustable Firmness
If the hip hurts most at night, the cause is a knee gap collapsing, and firmness is the whole fix. Bead fill is the only material you can genuinely firm up as the months pass.
- Shape
- Two-piece, shapeable
- Firmness
- Adjustable — bead fill you add or remove
- Bed footprint
- Small, moves with you
- Reuse
- Converts to a nursing support
What works
- Firmness you set, so the gap holds until morning
- Does not flatten the way fiber fill does
- Small footprint
- Converts to feeding support later
What it gives up
- Highest price
- Setup curve
- Faint bead noise
- No head support
Skip it ifyou want something cheap tonight — a firm cushion between the knees also works.

Pick 2 · Daytime hip pain with pelvic instability
8.5/10Serola Sacroiliac Belt for SI Joint Dysfunction
If the hip hurts on stairs and single-leg movements rather than after lying on it, the problem is pelvic stability rather than loading, and compression of the pelvic ring is what addresses it.
- Type
- Narrow sacroiliac (pelvic) belt — not a belly support
- Sits at
- Across the SI joints, below the belly
- Sizing
- By hip measurement, e.g. Large fits 40-45 in
- Design
- Non-slip, clinically oriented
What works
- Stabilizes the pelvic ring, reducing the movement that hurts
- Measured sizing by hip
- Non-slip through walking and stairs
- Useful postpartum
What it gives up
- No belly lift
- Clinical-looking
- Highest price in its category
- Less comfortable seated
Skip it ifthe pain is only present when you have been lying on that side.

Pick 3 · Taking weight off the loaded hip at night
8.3/10Hiccapop Pregnancy Wedge Pillow
The second half of the night-time fix and the cheaper half: a wedge under the bump reduces how much weight is bearing down through the hip you are lying on.
- Shape
- Wedge
- Support
- Belly, back or under the hip
- Bed footprint
- Pocket-sized
- Firmness
- Two-sided, firm and soft
What works
- Reduces direct loading on the hip you lie on
- Cheapest thing on this page
- Two firmness sides
- Also useful for reflux and chair support
What it gives up
- No knee gap
- Migrates
- No head support
- Partial answer on its own
Skip it ifyour hip pain is a daytime problem.

Questions people actually ask
How do you relieve pregnancy hip pain?
If it is worse at night, put something firm between your knees and something under your bump — that stops your pelvis rotating and reduces the load on the hip you are lying on.
If it is worse on stairs and single-leg movements, it is probably pelvic rather than the hip joint: sit down to dress, take stairs one at a time, use a narrow pelvic belt and ask for a physiotherapy referral.
Why does my hip hurt more at night than during the day?
Because at night you hold one position for hours, loading a single hip continuously, and pregnancy has made the ligaments around the pelvis more relaxed and less tolerant of that.
During the day you shift constantly, which spreads the load. That is also why the pain is often worst in the early hours.
Is hip pain in pregnancy normal?
Hip and back aches are listed among the ordinary discomforts of pregnancy, so it is common. Common is not the same as something you have to put up with.
Pain severe enough to stop you weight-bearing, or with a fever, new leg weakness or numbness, needs assessment rather than management.
Would a softer mattress help my hip?
On a firm mattress, often yes — the hip needs to sink slightly rather than being held on a hard plane. A topper is the cheap way to test it.
On an already soft mattress it can make things worse by letting your pelvis sag out of line, which produces the same rotation problem from the other direction.
Will pregnancy hip pain go away after birth?
The night-time kind from side-sleeping usually eases quickly once you can lie however you like again.
Pelvic pain often improves over the weeks after birth as ligament laxity reduces, but not always immediately. If it is still limiting you, ask for a pelvic health physiotherapy referral rather than waiting.
