This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your midwife, OB or GP about your own symptoms. Severe or sudden pain, bleeding, a fever, or regular contractions before 37 weeks need a call to your provider now — before you buy anything.

What round ligament pain feels like
A sharp, brief, stabbing or pulling pain low down on one side — usually the right — triggered by a sudden movement: standing up quickly, rolling over, coughing, sneezing or laughing. It lasts seconds rather than minutes, eases when you stay still, and is one of the commonly described discomforts of the second trimester. It is not a contraction and it is not labor.
Why it happens
The round ligaments are two cords that run from the upper part of the uterus down into the groin, helping to hold the uterus in position. As the uterus grows, they stretch and thin, and they become much more sensitive to sudden tension.
So a quick movement — a cough, standing up fast, twisting — snaps the ligament taut and produces a sharp, momentary pain. MedlinePlus lists abdominal aches and sharp pains among the ordinary discomforts of pregnancy, and ACOG covers pregnancy's common aches in similar terms.
It most often starts in the second trimester, when growth is fastest relative to what the ligaments are used to, and it tends to be worse on the right because the uterus commonly tilts that way.
What helps
- Move more slowly through the provocations. Getting up, turning over and getting out of a car are the usual triggers. Doing them deliberately rather than quickly prevents most episodes, which is the cheapest intervention available.
- Brace before you cough or sneeze. Flexing your hips slightly — bending toward the bump a little — shortens the ligament before the sudden pressure hits. It works and it feels odd the first few times.
- Support the bump during the day. A light band or belt takes some of the weight pulling on the ligaments. See the band comparison.
- Support the bump at night. If you wake sore low down on one side, the overnight drag is the cause and a wedge under the bump stops it.
- Heat on the sore area afterwards, if it has left a lingering ache. Warm rather than hot, and not enough to raise your core temperature.
- Sit down and flex toward the pain when an episode happens. It eases faster than standing still and waiting.
- Gentle activity rather than rest. Staying generally mobile within what your provider advises keeps the abdominal muscles doing their share.
How to tell it apart from something else
This is the most important part of the page, because “sharp pain low down on one side” describes several things, most of them harmless and a few of them not.
| Pattern | Probably |
|---|---|
| Sharp, seconds long, with sudden movement, eases at rest | Round ligament pain |
| Regular, rhythmic tightening that comes and goes in a pattern | Contractions — call if before 37 weeks |
| Constant, worsening, or severe rather than momentary | Needs assessment |
| With bleeding or fluid leaking | Needs assessment now |
| With a fever, or pain on passing urine | Possible infection — needs review |
| Upper right abdomen, with headache or visual changes | Possible preeclampsia — urgent |
| With vomiting, or feeling very unwell | Needs assessment |
The honest rule is that round ligament pain is momentary and movement-triggered. Anything constant, worsening, severe, or accompanied by bleeding, fever, fluid, reduced movements or feeling unwell is a different question and needs your provider rather than a heat pack.
When does it stop?
It usually settles in the third trimester as growth slows relative to the ligaments' adaptation, though plenty of people get occasional twinges right through. It is not something that requires resolution to be reassuring — the reassurance is in the pattern rather than the absence.
If you are unsure whether what you are feeling is round ligament pain, that uncertainty is itself a good reason to ring your midwife. They would rather answer a question about a harmless twinge than have you sit at home with something that needed checking.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · Taking the drag off the ligaments
8.5/10KeaBabies Pregnancy Belly Bands
Round ligament pain is provoked by the bump's weight pulling on the ligaments, so light continuous support that takes some of that weight is the most relevant product. Thin enough to wear all day, which matters because the provocations happen at random.
- Type
- Breathable mesh belly band
- Support
- Pelvic, hip and lower back
- Size range
- M/L through 2XL
- Under clothes
- Thin enough to disappear under a tee
What works
- Light continuous support reduces the pull on the ligaments
- Thin enough to wear all day under clothes
- Breathable mesh
- Sized M/L through 2XL
What it gives up
- Will not prevent a sudden sharp twinge entirely
- Light support only
- Top edge can roll
- Not for significant pain of other kinds
Skip it ifyou have a deep lumbar ache — that wants a structured belt instead.

Pick 2 · The night-time pull
8.3/10Hiccapop Pregnancy Wedge Pillow
The overnight version of the same mechanism: lying on your side with no support under the bump lets it hang and drag on the ligaments for hours. A wedge under it stops that, and it is the cheapest useful thing here.
- Shape
- Wedge
- Support
- Belly, back or under the hip
- Bed footprint
- Pocket-sized
- Firmness
- Two-sided, firm and soft
What works
- Stops the overnight drag that produces morning soreness
- Cheapest thing on this page
- Two firmness sides
- Also works for reflux
What it gives up
- Nothing between the knees
- Migrates overnight
- No head support
- Partial answer
Skip it ifyour pain only happens with sudden daytime movements.

Questions people actually ask
What does round ligament pain feel like?
A sharp, brief, stabbing or pulling pain low down on one side, usually the right, triggered by a sudden movement like standing up quickly, rolling over, coughing or sneezing.
It lasts seconds rather than minutes and eases when you stay still. That momentary, movement-triggered pattern is the defining feature.
When does round ligament pain start?
Most often in the second trimester, when uterine growth is fastest relative to what the ligaments have adapted to.
It tends to settle in the third trimester as growth slows, though occasional twinges can continue throughout.
How do you relieve round ligament pain?
Move more slowly through the triggers — getting up, turning over, getting out of a car. Brace by flexing your hips slightly before you cough or sneeze, which shortens the ligament before the pressure hits.
Light support for the bump during the day and a wedge under it at night both reduce the pull. Warmth helps a lingering ache afterwards.
Is round ligament pain dangerous?
In itself, no — it is one of the commonly described discomforts of pregnancy. The caution is about mistaking something else for it.
Anything constant, worsening or severe rather than momentary, or with bleeding, fluid leaking, fever, reduced movements or feeling unwell, needs your provider rather than a heat pack.
How do I tell round ligament pain from contractions?
Round ligament pain is momentary and triggered by movement. Contractions are rhythmic: they come and go in a pattern, build and fade, and are not caused by how you moved.
Regular tightening before 37 weeks needs a call to your provider now.
