The short answer
Size from your bed first, your height second. A U needs a queen or larger; a C fits a double; a J or a wedge fits anything. For length, a 55 to 57 inch body pillow suits most people up to about 5 foot 9. Taller than that, go to the long end of the range so your knees still land on it.
Step 1: your bed decides the shape
This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that determines whether the pillow is still in use at 38 weeks. Measure before you compare shapes.
| Bed | Sleeping alone | Sharing with an adult |
|---|---|---|
| Single / twin | C or J | — |
| Double / full | U works, snugly | J, wedge pair, or a small C |
| Queen | U comfortably | C or J; a U is tight |
| King | Anything | U works |
A 55 to 57 inch U is roughly 30 inches across at its widest, which is most of half a queen. That is the number people are surprised by, and it is the most common reason these pillows end up in a cupboard. We argue the shapes out in U-shaped versus C-shaped.
Step 2: your height decides the length
The thing that matters is whether your knees land on the pillow when your head is at the top of it. If they do not, the knee gap — the single most useful thing a pregnancy pillow does — is not happening.
| Your height | Body pillow length | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5'2" | 50-55 in | A 57 in pillow will overhang; not harmful, just unwieldy |
| 5'2" to 5'9" | 55-57 in | The standard range; most pillows are here |
| 5'9" to 6'0" | 57-60 in | Buy the long end, or your knees come off the end |
| Over 6'0" | 60 in+ | Options are limited; a wedge pair may suit better |
A wedge has no length requirement, which is part of why it is the safe first purchase.
Step 3: firmness, which is not a size but behaves like one
A pillow that is the right size and too soft fails at the job anyway. The knee gap has to hold, and polyester fiber fill compresses under the weight of a leg within a couple of hours.
- Bead fill — firmest, adjustable, most expensive.
- Memory foam — holds height, runs warm, heavy.
- Polyester fiber — light, cheap, flattens. Fine for belly support, poor for the knee gap.
If you are choosing between two pillows of the same size, the firmer one is usually the better buy — see the hip-pain comparison, where fill drives the ranking.
The washing question, which affects your size choice
Worth thinking about before you buy, because it is a genuine annoyance with large pillows.
The cover must be removable. Treat a non-removable cover as a reason not to buy, because you will be sweating on this for months.
The pillow itself is usually spot-clean only. A 57-inch fiber-filled pillow takes days to dry properly, can clump if machine-washed, and may not fit in a domestic machine at all. Check the care label.
This is a quiet argument for smaller or modular designs: a wedge and a knee cushion both fit in a washing machine, and a U does not.
What to do if you are between sizes
Go smaller and add a second piece. A C plus a wedge costs about the same as a U, takes less bed, washes more easily, and lets you take the wedge away with you. A single large pillow is tidier; two smaller ones are more adaptable.
And if you are buying before about 24 weeks, buy small deliberately. A wedge now tells you whether belly support was what you needed, and if you later want something shaped you will buy it knowing which problem you actually have. See pregnancy pillow versus wedge.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · Taller than about 5 foot 9
8.5/10MOON PARK 57 Inch U Shaped Full Body Maternity Pillow
A 57-inch U, which is the long end of the standard range and the right choice if you are tall. The failure mode of a short pillow for a tall person is that your knees land off the end of it, which defeats the main purpose.
- Shape
- U, wraps both sides
- Length
- 57 in
- Cover
- Removable
- Bed footprint
- Wide
What works
- 57 inches — long enough for most tall frames
- Full U support from either side
- Removable cover
- Widely available
What it gives up
- Needs a queen or larger
- Hot
- Heavy
- Bulky to store
Skip it ifyou are under about 5 foot 4 — a shorter pillow will fit you better.

Pick 2 · A double bed shared with another adult
8.4/10Momcozy J Shaped Pregnancy Pillow
The size answer for a genuinely small bed. A J does the knee gap and the belly properly in roughly half the width of a C, which is the difference between a pillow you both tolerate and a pillow that causes an argument.
- Shape
- J, one-sided
- Support
- Head, belly, knees on one side
- Bed footprint
- Half a U
- Cover
- Removable, machine washable
What works
- Smallest shaped footprint
- Does the knee gap properly
- Light enough to flip
- Fits a shared double
What it gives up
- No back support
- Flip it when you turn
- Shallow head section
- Can slide
Skip it ifyou have the space for a C or U.

Pick 3 · When no shaped pillow will fit
8.3/10Hiccapop Pregnancy Wedge Pillow
The answer when the bed genuinely cannot take anything. A wedge takes up no meaningful space and still fixes belly drag, and two of them cover belly and back. The sizing question disappears entirely.
- Shape
- Wedge
- Support
- Belly, back or under the hip
- Bed footprint
- Pocket-sized
- Firmness
- Two-sided, firm and soft
What works
- No sizing question at all
- Fits any bed
- Two of them covers belly and back
- Travels
What it gives up
- No knee gap
- Migrates
- No head support
- Needs a partner piece
Skip it ifyou have room for something shaped.

Questions people actually ask
What size pregnancy pillow do I need?
Start from your bed. A U-shape needs a queen or larger to be comfortable, especially if you share; a C fits a double; a J or a wedge fits anything.
For length, 55 to 57 inches suits most people up to about 5 foot 9. Taller than that, buy the long end of the range so your knees still land on the pillow.
How much space does a pregnancy pillow take up?
A 55 to 57 inch U-shape is roughly 30 inches across at its widest, which is most of half a queen bed. That is the figure people underestimate.
A C takes roughly half that, a J less again, and a wedge takes no meaningful space at all.
I am tall. Will a standard pregnancy pillow work?
Up to about 5 foot 9, yes — the standard 55 to 57 inch range covers most people. Above that, your knees start landing off the end, which defeats the main purpose.
Buy the long end of the range, or use a wedge plus a separate knee cushion, which has no length constraint at all.
Can you put a pregnancy pillow in the washing machine?
The cover, yes, and it should be removable — treat a fixed cover as a reason not to buy. Check the label, because some covers shrink enough to be a struggle to get back on.
The pillow itself is usually spot-clean only. A large fiber-filled pillow takes days to dry and can clump if machine-washed, and may not fit a domestic machine.
Should I buy two smaller pillows or one big one?
Two smaller pieces are more adaptable, take less bed, wash more easily and travel. One large pillow is tidier and needs no arranging.
If you are between sizes or buying before 24 weeks, go smaller and add a second piece later once you know which problem you actually have.
