A person stretching in activewear at home.

The short answer

Buy the bra first. It makes more difference to whether exercise is comfortable than every other garment combined, and it is the piece people buy last. Then one pair of technical-fabric leggings and a couple of long tanks. That is a complete setup, and it is fewer pieces than most people buy.

Staying active, briefly

ACOG and the NHS both encourage staying active through pregnancy, and the usual framing is to continue what you were already doing, moderated, rather than taking up something new and strenuous. What is appropriate for you depends on your pregnancy and your own provider's advice.

The standard advice to stop and seek advice applies: vaginal bleeding, regular painful contractions, fluid leaking, dizziness or feeling faint, chest pain, calf pain or swelling, headache, or muscle weakness affecting balance all mean stopping and contacting your provider.

Why the bra is the piece that matters

Breast size and tenderness both change substantially in pregnancy, and the bra you exercised in last year is almost certainly wrong now. An unsupported or badly fitting bra makes movement uncomfortable in a way that no amount of good leggings compensates for, and it is the single most common reason people stop exercising earlier than they needed to.

What to look for: band-and-cup sizing rather than S/M/L if you are above a D cup, a snug band (the band does the work, not the straps), and enough stretch to tolerate your size changing again. If you buy one around 36 weeks, a clip-down style means it also works for nursing. See maternity bras.

The two things that go wrong with everything else

The top rides up. Ordinary tops are not cut long enough to cover a bump when you raise your arms, and you spend the session pulling them down. Long ribbed tanks solve it cheaply; one-pieces solve it entirely.

The waistband slides down. Under-bump waistbands in particular, once the bump has weight. Over-belly panels with a high rise resist it, and technical fabric resists it better than brushed loungewear.

That is the argument for one-piece activewear, which eliminates both. The counterweight is real and worth saying: a jumpsuit has to come off entirely for a bathroom trip, and pregnancy involves a lot of bathroom trips.

Fabric: technical versus comfortable

Technical athletic knit wicks sweat, holds its shape and keeps its opacity through repeated washing. Brushed or ribbed loungewear fabric is softer, holds sweat, and bags at the knee sooner.

If you are exercising a few times a week, buy one technical pair rather than three brushed ones — the cost per wear ends up similar and the experience is substantially better. If you are walking, brushed fabric is fine and more pleasant.

Pregnancy makes you run hot, which tilts this further toward technical fabric in summer. See what to wear when pregnant in summer.

Support belts and exercise

Some people find a belly band helpful for running or impact work, where the bump moving independently is the complaint. If your issue is instead the pelvis feeling unstable — pain over the pubic bone or the dimples above your buttocks, worse on single-leg movements — a belly band will not help and a narrow pelvic belt might. See belly bands for running.

How we picked

Six axes: support, bump coverage, sweat management, whether it stays put while moving, size range and value per wear. Support and staying put are weighted hardest, because they are what determine whether a session is comfortable.

Note that the bra scores low on bump coverage and the tanks score low on support, which is correct rather than a flaw — these are pieces of a setup rather than alternatives to each other, and a single rubric across all of them shows that honestly.

We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.

Swimming is the other answer

Worth saying on an activewear page: swimming is the activity that stays comfortable longest in pregnancy, because the water takes your weight. If walking has become uncomfortable, that is often the next thing to try rather than giving up on exercise. See maternity swimsuits.

Top pick · The piece that matters most

8.8/10

Kindred Bravely Essentials Sports Pumping and Nursing Bra 2 Pack

Put this first deliberately: a properly supportive bra makes more difference to whether exercise is comfortable in pregnancy than any other garment, and it is the piece people buy last. This one also pumps and nurses, so it carries past the birth.

Type
Sports bra that pumps and nurses
Pack
2
Support
Low to moderate impact
Wires
Wireless

What works

  • Real support for low to moderate impact
  • Band-and-cup sizing rather than S/M/L
  • Also works for pumping and nursing afterwards
  • Two pack

What it gives up

  • Not enough for high-impact running
  • Pumping features are redundant if you will not need them
  • Mid-to-high price
  • Warmer than a plain bralette

Skip it ifyou are running rather than walking — you want a higher-impact bra.

Pick 2 · The leggings you actually train in

8.7/10

CRZ YOGA Maternity Leggings with Pockets 25 Inch

Technical athletic fabric rather than brushed loungewear, which is the difference between leggings that wick and leggings that get heavy. Over-belly panel, pockets, defined inseam. The pair that holds up to repeated washing.

Pick 3 · One garment instead of two

8.3/10

BLENCOT Maternity Workout Sets Ribbed Tank Tops with Bra

A tank with a built-in bra, which removes a layer and a decision. For walking and low-impact work it is enough, it covers the bump properly, and ribbed knit is forgiving across a changing shape.

Tank plus built-in bra
Fabric
Ribbed stretch knit

Coverage

What works

  • One garment instead of two layers
  • Full bump coverage
  • Ribbed knit accommodates growth
  • Light built-in support

What it gives up

  • Built-in support is light — not for impact
  • Cannot adjust bra and top independently
  • Ribbed fabric holds sweat more than technical knit
  • Shows every mark

Pick 4 · Nothing riding up or sliding down

8.0/10

MOMANDA Maternity Jumpsuit Leggings 25 Inch

A one-piece removes the two things that go wrong in maternity activewear: the top riding up and the waistband sliding down. For yoga and stretching particularly, where you are inverting and bending, that is worth more than it sounds.

Type
Full-length jumpsuit
Inseam
25 in
Fabric
Stretch athletic knit

Training and everyday

What works

  • Nothing to ride up or slide down
  • Excellent for yoga, stretching and floor work
  • Full coverage
  • Smooth line with no waistband

What it gives up

  • Bathroom trips require full removal — a real issue in pregnancy
  • Harder to adjust for temperature
  • Sizing is less forgiving
  • Single garment means one in the wash is none to wear

Skip it ifyou need the bathroom as often as most pregnant people do.

Pick 5 · Warm-weather yoga

7.9/10

BDITANLE Maternity Yoga Romper Ribbed Seamless Shorts Jumpsuit

Shorts length and seamless ribbed fabric, which makes it the coolest option here — relevant because pregnancy makes you run hot and exercising pregnant in summer is genuinely difficult. Same one-piece advantages and the same bathroom problem.

One-piece romper

Ribbed seamless knit
Use
Yoga, warm weather

Shorts length

What works

  • Coolest option here by a distance
  • Seamless, so nothing chafes
  • One piece, nothing shifts
  • Good for yoga and warm-weather walking

What it gives up

  • Bathroom trips require full removal
  • Light support
  • Shorts length will not suit everyone
  • Thin fabric

Skip it ifyou want more coverage.

Pick 6 · Layering, cheaply

7.7/10

Ekouaer Maternity Tank Tops Ribbed 4 Pack

Four long ribbed tanks, which is the sensible cheap purchase for a pregnancy wardrobe generally and useful for exercise specifically: long enough to cover the bump when you raise your arms, which is the usual failure of ordinary tops.

Fabric
Ribbed stretch knit

Long, covers the bump

Layering and summer

What works

  • Long enough to cover the bump with arms raised
  • Four pack — the lowest cost per piece here
  • Layers under or over
  • Useful outside exercise too

What it gives up

  • No support at all
  • Ribbed cotton-blend holds sweat
  • Not technical fabric
  • Shows marks

Skip it ifyou want technical fabric for real training.

Questions people actually ask

What should I wear to exercise while pregnant?

A properly supportive bra first — it makes more difference to comfort than every other garment combined and is the piece people buy last. Then one pair of technical-fabric leggings and a couple of long tanks.

That is a complete setup and fewer pieces than most people buy.

Do I need maternity activewear, or can I use what I have?

Your existing leggings may work for a while, sized up. The two things that fail are tops riding up over the bump when you raise your arms, and waistbands sliding down once the bump has weight.

The bra is the piece where existing kit is most likely to be wrong, because breast size changes substantially.

Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?

ACOG and the NHS both encourage staying active, and the usual framing is to continue what you were already doing, moderated, rather than taking up something new and strenuous.

What is appropriate depends on your pregnancy and your provider's advice. Stop and seek advice for bleeding, regular painful contractions, fluid leaking, dizziness, chest pain, calf pain or swelling, or headache.

Is a maternity jumpsuit good for working out?

For yoga, stretching and floor work it is excellent, because nothing rides up or slides down while you are inverting or bending.

The practical drawback is real: it has to come off entirely for a bathroom trip, and pregnancy involves a lot of those.

Do I need a belly band to exercise?

Some people find one helpful for running or impact work, where the bump moving independently is the complaint.

If your issue is the pelvis feeling unstable — pain over the pubic bone or the dimples above your buttocks, worse on single-leg movements — a belly band will not help and a narrow pelvic belt might.
