A soft bra folded on a neutral background.

The short answer

Buy four to six cheap sleep bras and two good day bras, not three of one thing. Sleep bras need to open without you looking at them; day bras need structure; and if you are pumping regularly, that is a third category. One bra cannot do all three well, and trying to make it is why people end up with a drawer of bras they do not wear.

Three categories, three different right answers

Sleep bras: access beats support

In the first two weeks you will be feeding lying down, in the dark, repeatedly, and probably leaking. Nothing about that rewards structure. What matters is that the bra opens without you being able to see what you are doing, which is why pull-aside and crossover styles beat clips decisively for nights. Buy more of these than feels reasonable and buy them cheap, because they are going through the wash constantly.

Day bras: fit stops being optional

Once you are leaving the house you want support, and here fit matters for a reason beyond comfort: a bra pressing persistently on one spot of breast tissue is a genuine problem rather than an annoyance. If you are above a D cup, look specifically at brands that size by band and cup rather than S/M/L — letter sizing simply runs out of room, and sizing up gets you a bigger band rather than a bigger cup.

Pumping bras: a real third thing

A hands-free pumping bra is the difference between pumping being a twenty-minute dead stop and something you do while answering email. If you are exclusively pumping, buy a dedicated one. If it is occasional, the combination pump-and-nurse styles genuinely work and save you changing. See the pumping bra comparison.

When to buy

Around 36 weeks is the sweet spot. Buy at 20 weeks and your rib cage has not finished expanding, so the band size will be wrong. Wait until the baby arrives and you are ordering bras from a sofa while engorged, which is both the worst moment to judge fit and the point at which you most need one.

Buy stretchy, wireless styles for those first ones specifically, because the size you need in week one postpartum is not the size you will settle at. We go through the timing in when to buy nursing bras, and the quantities in how many nursing bras you need.

Sizing, and why it is harder than it should be

Three things move at once in the weeks around birth: your rib cage contracts back from its pregnancy expansion, your milk comes in and your breasts change size dramatically, and then both settle over roughly six weeks. Any bra bought to fit one of those states fits the others badly.

The practical response is to buy stretchy for the first month and structured once things have settled, rather than trying to find one bra that spans the whole thing. It is also why the cheap seamless bralettes are a better first purchase than an expensive structured bra, even though the structured bra is the better garment.

Our nursing bra sizing guide has the measuring method and the brand-variance notes.

How we picked

Six axes: support, one-handed access, genuine size range, fabric and breathability, comfort lying down, and pumping compatibility. We weighted access and size range heavily, because those are the two things the reported complaints are overwhelmingly about — clips that cannot be worked one-handed, and letter sizing that does not hold a larger cup. We read the current listings rather than wearing anything; the method is on how we pick.

Wires: the honest position

There is no rule that you must avoid underwires while breastfeeding, and plenty of people wear them without trouble. The real issue is pressure in the wrong place — a wire digging into breast tissue rather than sitting in the root of the breast — and because fit changes constantly in the first weeks, that risk is highest exactly then.

So: wireless as the default early on, and a well-fitted underwired bra is a perfectly reasonable thing to own once your size has stopped moving. If you notice a tender lump, a red patch or a painful area, speak to your midwife, GP or a lactation consultant rather than working through it — ACOG and the NHS both have guidance on breastfeeding problems worth reading.

What this page cannot help with

Whether feeding goes well depends on latch, supply and having someone knowledgeable look at it, none of which a bra affects. If feeding hurts, if the baby is not gaining, or if you are worried about supply, the thing that helps is a lactation consultant or your midwife, not a different bra. This page is about the layer around that problem, which is genuinely worth getting right and is not the problem itself.

Every pick, in detail

Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.

Top pick · The one day bra to buy first

9.1/10

Kindred Bravely Simply Sublime Nursing Bra Wireless

The most generally recommendable nursing bra here. Wireless but genuinely supportive, clip-down access that works one-handed, and a size range that goes well past a D cup in band-and-cup sizing rather than stopping at L. If you buy one day bra before the birth, this is the sensible one.

All-day wear, pregnancy through nursing

What works

  • Real support without an underwire
  • Band-and-cup sizing, so larger cups are actually catered for
  • Clips open one-handed with practice
  • Comfortable enough for all-day wear

What it gives up

  • Clips are fiddly in the dark — not a sleep bra
  • Molded cups are warmer than a seamless bralette
  • Mid-to-high price
  • Takes a wash cycle to soften

Skip it ifyou want something to sleep in — buy a pull-aside style for nights.

Pick 2 · Nights, and the first two weeks generally

8.9/10

Kindred Bravely Essentials Crossover Nursing Bra Wire Free 2 Pack

The bra to buy most of. No clips at all — you pull the crossover panel aside, which is the only access method that genuinely works half-asleep at 3am. Stretchy enough to tolerate a size change overnight, which is exactly what the first fortnight does to you. A two-pack is the right quantity thinking.

What works

  • No clips, so it works in the dark without looking
  • Stretches across a size change rather than stopping fitting
  • Two-pack, which matches how often these get washed
  • Comfortable to sleep in

What it gives up

  • Minimal support — not a going-out bra
  • Crossover panel can gape under a fitted top
  • No structure if you are above a D cup
  • Stretches out over time

Skip it ifyou need support and shaping under clothes during the day.

Pick 3 · Larger cups without an underwire

8.7/10

Cake Maternity Tutti Frutti Wire Free Nursing Bra for B-H Cups

The problem with being above a D cup in the first weeks is that the supportive bras have wires and the wireless bras have no structure. This is the pick that resolves it: cups through an H, wire free, engineered to hold rather than just contain. From a brand that only makes maternity bras.

Larger cups without an underwire

What works

  • Cups B to H with real engineering behind the larger sizes
  • Wire free, which is the lower-risk default in the early weeks
  • Clip-down access
  • Specialist brand rather than a general one sizing up

What it gives up

  • Higher price than the mainstream options
  • Fewer colors and styles
  • Firmer fabric takes adjusting to
  • Still a clip bra, so awkward at night

Skip it ifyou are a B or C cup — you are paying for engineering you do not need.

Pick 4 · Night pumping without changing bras

8.5/10

Kindred Bravely Sublime Hands Free Pumping Lounge and Sleep Bra

The combination bra, and the one case where a combination product is clearly right: at 3am, the difference between changing into a pumping bra and not is the difference between going back to sleep and not. Soft enough to sleep in, with flange openings for hands-free pumping.

Type
Pumping plus nursing in one
Wires
Wireless
Use
Night pumping without changing bras

Soft brushed knit

What works

  • Pumps hands-free and nurses, so no changing at night
  • Soft brushed fabric you can sleep in
  • Removes a whole step from a night pumping session
  • Wireless

What it gives up

  • Less support than a dedicated day bra
  • Less pumping precision than a dedicated pumping bra
  • Compromise at both jobs by design
  • Mid-to-high price

Skip it ifyou are exclusively pumping — buy a dedicated pumping bra instead.

Pick 5 · Buying several without spending much

8.2/10

Momcozy YN21 Seamless Comfort Maternity Nursing Bra

The sensible budget pick, and worth having two or three of rather than one of something better. Seamless so there are no seams to show or rub, clip-down access, removable pads. Not enough structure above a D cup, which is the honest limit of letter-sized bras generally.

What works

  • Low enough price to buy three
  • Seamless — nothing to show under a fitted top
  • Removable pads
  • Comfortable from the first wear

What it gives up

  • Letter sizing runs out of support above about a D
  • Clips are plastic and less robust
  • Stretches out faster than the pricier options
  • Pads bunch in the wash

Skip it ifyou are above a D cup — letter sizing will not hold you.

Pick 6 · Structure, once feeding has settled

8.0/10

MELENECA Plus Size Nursing Bra Underwire Full Coverage

The only underwired bra on this page, and included deliberately: there is no rule that you must avoid wires while nursing, and once feeding has settled and your size has stopped moving, a structured bra is far more comfortable for a long day than a bralette. The caveat is timing — not for week one.

What works

  • Genuine structure and lift, which bralettes cannot provide
  • Plus-size range with full coverage
  • Clip-down access
  • Far better under work clothes than a soft bra

What it gives up

  • Wires need a settled size and a correct fit, so not for the first weeks
  • A badly fitting wire pressing on breast tissue is a real problem
  • Not comfortable to sleep in
  • Needs replacing if your size changes again

Skip it ifyou are in the first few weeks postpartum, or your size is still changing week to week.

Questions people actually ask

How many nursing bras do I need?

Think in two buckets. Four to six sleep bras, because you will be in one almost around the clock early on and they get washed constantly. Two or three day bras with real support.

If you are pumping at work, add two pumping bras so one can be in the wash. Buying all of them at once is the thing to avoid — sizes settle over the first month.

When should I buy nursing bras during pregnancy?

Around 36 weeks. Your rib cage has done most of its expanding by then, so the band size is usually still right after the birth.

Choose stretchy wireless styles for the first ones rather than structured bras, because the size you need in week one postpartum is not the size you will settle at.

What size nursing bra should I get?

If you can, measure your band under the bust and buy band-and-cup sizing rather than S/M/L, especially above a D cup — letter-sized bras run out of cup room long before they run out of band.

Expect to need a different size six weeks in. That is normal rather than a sizing mistake, and it is the reason to start with stretchy styles.

Should I avoid underwires while breastfeeding?

There is no rule against them, and many people wear them without problems. The real concern is a wire pressing persistently on breast tissue rather than sitting in the root of the breast.

Because fit changes a lot in the first weeks, wireless is the lower-risk default early on. If you notice a tender lump or a red patch, speak to your midwife, GP or a lactation consultant.

Can I use a regular bra and just pull it up?

Physically yes, and people do in a pinch. The problem is that pulling a regular bra up compresses the breast from underneath, which is exactly the sustained pressure worth avoiding.

A nursing bra's whole design point is access without compression, which is why the cheap seamless ones are still better for this than a good regular bra.

Do I need a nursing bra if I am not breastfeeding?

Not for access, but the early postpartum weeks still involve significant size change and often engorgement whether or not you are feeding, so soft wireless bras are more comfortable than structured ones either way.

A couple of stretchy sleep bras is a reasonable purchase regardless of how you are feeding.
