What actually works

Layers, volume from above the bump, pattern, and darker colors — plus a belly band so you can stay in your own trousers unbuttoned. What gives it away is a fitted waistband, a top that is suddenly too short, and clothes that are obviously new. The most effective disguise is wearing things people have already seen you in, which is why keeping your own wardrobe working matters more than buying anything.

Why this page exists

There is a real and awkward stretch — often weeks 8 to 16 — where you know and your workplace does not, and your body has started making the decision for you. It is nobody’s business until you say so, and there is nothing dishonest about dressing for that.

It is also the stretch where you are most likely to be exhausted and possibly nauseated, so the practical goal is comfort that happens not to announce anything.

The techniques, in order of effectiveness

1. Layers

The single most effective thing. A long tank or camisole under an open shirt, a cardigan, a blazer or a longer waistcoat breaks up the silhouette and nothing reads as a disguise. An open layer specifically, because it draws a vertical line.

2. Volume from above the bump

Anything that flows from the bust or the shoulder rather than the waist: a blouse with a yoke, an A-line top, a swing dress. The giveaway is a seam at the waist, because a waist seam sits exactly where the change is.

3. A belly band, so your own trousers keep working

Unbutton your own trousers, pull a stretchy band over the waistband, cover with a long top. Nobody sees the band, your trousers are the ones you always wear, and you are comfortable. See belly bands.

4. Pattern and texture

A pattern breaks up a silhouette far more than a plain fabric does. So does texture — a chunky knit or a crinkle fabric hides a shape a smooth jersey shows.

5. Darker colors

Works, modestly. Less effective than layering or volume, and it is worth saying so rather than repeating it as the main advice.

6. Scarves and long necklaces

A vertical line down the center draws the eye up and down rather than across. Minor, and it costs nothing if you already own one.

What gives it away

  • A fitted waistband. The most obvious tell, and the most uncomfortable thing to persist with.
  • A top that has become too short at the front. Hems rise as the bump grows, and a shirt that no longer tucks or sits properly is noticeable.
  • Suddenly dressing differently. A wardrobe that changes overnight is more conspicuous than a bump. Introduce looser pieces gradually.
  • Obvious maternity cuts. Ruched side panels and empire seams read as maternity to anyone who has been pregnant.
  • Not drinking, or leaving meetings. Not a clothing problem, but it is usually what people actually notice. No garment solves that.

What to buy, minimally

The aim is to spend almost nothing, because everything you buy for this stage is for a few weeks.

  • One belly band.
  • Two or three long tanks or camisoles for layering.
  • One looser shirt or blouse in a pattern, if you do not own one. Not maternity cut.
  • Possibly a knit dress, which removes the waistband problem entirely and reads as ordinary clothing.

That is it. Anything else is better bought later, when you can buy actual maternity wear that fits properly. See when to start wearing maternity clothes.

The comfort problem nobody mentions

Hiding a bump and being comfortable pull in opposite directions, and in the first trimester comfort should usually win.

You are likely tired in a way that is hard to describe, possibly nauseated, and certainly warmer than you used to be — and layering, which is the main disguise technique, makes the warmth worse. If you are choosing between a layer that hides the bump and being able to get through the afternoon, get through the afternoon.

Bras are the other half of this. Breast tenderness arrives before any bump does, and it is often the first thing that makes ordinary work clothes uncomfortable. A soft wireless bra one band size up helps more than any outer layer. See maternity bras.

When hiding it stops working

Usually somewhere between 14 and 18 weeks, and it is not gradual — one week the layers work and the next they do not. That is a normal point to stop trying.

At that stage the useful move is to switch to proper maternity wear rather than persisting with increasingly uncomfortable workarounds. Our work clothes comparison covers what to buy, and the blazer trick — wearing your own, open — keeps working indefinitely.

One practical note: if your work involves anything physically demanding, standing for long periods, chemical exposure or night shifts, those are worth raising with your midwife or OB and with your employer earlier rather than later, regardless of when you tell colleagues. The NHS and ACOG both discuss activity and work in pregnancy, and adjustments usually take time to arrange.

Every pick, in detail

Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.

Top pick · Staying in your own clothes

8.7/10

Pick 2 · Layering, which is the whole strategy

8.4/10

Ekouaer Maternity Tank Tops Ribbed 4 Pack

Layers are what disguise an early bump, and a long tank under a looser shirt or blouse does it without looking like you are hiding anything. Four of them costs very little and they stay useful all pregnancy.

Pick 3 · A dress that is not obviously maternity

8.0/10

BLENCOT Midi Maternity Dress Rib Knit Mock Neck

A midi knit dress with volume from the bust down reads as a dress rather than as maternity wear, and it removes the waistband problem entirely — which is the thing most likely to make you uncomfortable before you have told anyone.

Questions people actually ask

What should I wear to hide an early bump at work?

Layers, volume that flows from above the bump rather than the waist, pattern and texture, plus a belly band so you can wear your own trousers unbuttoned.

The most effective disguise is wearing things people have already seen you in, which is why keeping your existing wardrobe working matters more than buying anything new.

What gives away an early pregnancy at work?

A fitted waistband, a top that has become short at the front, and suddenly dressing differently — a wardrobe that changes overnight is more conspicuous than a bump.

Obvious maternity cuts like ruched side panels also read as maternity to anyone who has been pregnant.

How long can you hide a bump?

Usually somewhere between 14 and 18 weeks, and it tends not to be gradual — one week the layers work and the next they do not.

That is a normal point to switch to proper maternity wear rather than persisting with increasingly uncomfortable workarounds.

Do I have to tell my employer when I find out?

When you tell colleagues is your decision. What is worth doing earlier is raising anything about your actual working conditions — heavy lifting, long periods standing, chemical exposure, night shifts — with your midwife or OB and with your employer.

Adjustments usually take time to arrange, which is the practical reason not to leave it.

Is it worth buying anything for this stage?

Very little. A belly band, two or three long tanks for layering, and possibly one looser patterned blouse covers it.

Everything else is better bought later, when you can buy maternity wear that actually fits rather than clothes chosen to disguise something.
