The short answer
Buy stretch rather than structure. At smaller cup sizes the problem is a cup that gapes, not a lack of support. Seamless stretch bras conform to you rather than holding a shape you have to fill, which is why they work better here than they do at larger cups. A small band with a larger cup is also common, and band-and-cup sizing handles that where letters do not.
The problem, which is the opposite one
Most nursing-bra advice is written for people whose problem is finding enough support, and it is unhelpful at the other end of the range.
At a smaller cup size, support is largely a non-issue: a soft bralette is comfortable and sufficient, and structured bras are actively worse because there is a shaped cup you are not filling. The complaint is gaping — a cup that stands away from you, which looks wrong under clothes, lets a breast pad shift, and creates a gap that leaks through.
The other common issue is the band. Letter-sized bras grade band and cup together, so a narrower rib cage with a slightly larger cup gets a bra that is loose everywhere, and a loose band is a bra that rides up.
What actually fixes it
Stretch over structure
A seamless stretch bra conforms to whatever shape you are, which means no gap. A molded cup is a fixed shape, and at a smaller size there is air in it. This is the single most useful change to make.
Removable pads, used deliberately
Pads in a stretch bra fill a gap and give a smoother line under clothes. Most seamless nursing bras include them. The point is that they are removable, so you can decide — some people want the shaping, some find it adds bulk.
Technical fabric for shape retention
If soft jersey is still gaping after a few washes, the fabric has lost its recovery. Technical athletic knit holds its shape considerably longer, which at a smaller cup size translates directly into less gaping.
Band-and-cup sizing, if letters do not fit
If an S is loose round your ribs but tight in the cup, letter sizing is not working for your proportions. Traditional band-and-cup sizing varies the two independently, and that is as useful at the small end as it is at the large.
Size changes still happen
Worth saying clearly, because it surprises people: breast size changes substantially in pregnancy and again when milk comes in, regardless of your starting size. Plenty of people who have always been a smaller cup find themselves two sizes up in the weeks after birth.
That is the practical argument for stretchy styles early: a bra that only fits one of those states is a bra you wear for three weeks. Buy stretch at 36 weeks, then buy something fitted at six weeks postpartum once your size has settled, if you want to. See when to buy nursing bras.
Leaking and pads
Leaking is not related to cup size, and the practical consequence is that a bra which gapes is worse at holding a breast pad in place — the pad shifts and milk gets past it. That is a real reason to care about gaping beyond appearance.
A conforming stretch bra holds a pad flat against you. If pads keep moving, the bra is usually the reason rather than the pad.
How we picked
The same six axes we use across every bra comparison, which is deliberate — a kinder rubric for smaller sizes would hide the fact that these bras genuinely offer less support, and at a smaller cup that is fine rather than a flaw. Size range and fabric are weighted hardest here, because conforming fit is the thing being bought.
We read the current listings and the reported fit experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.
One thing worth saying
Breast size has no bearing on whether you can breastfeed or on how much milk you make. If feeding is not going well, or you are worried about supply, the people who can help are a lactation consultant, your midwife or your health visitor — and ACOG and the NHS both publish guidance worth reading. A different bra is not the variable.

Pick 5 · Band-and-cup sizing at smaller cups
7.9/10Gratlin Cotton Nursing Bra for Breastfeeding
Traditional band-and-cup sizing rather than letters, which is as useful at the small end as the large: if your band and cup are not in the ratio letter sizing assumes, a sized bra fits where an S does not.

Questions people actually ask
What nursing bras work for smaller breasts?
Seamless stretch bras, because they conform to you rather than holding a shape you have to fill. A molded cup at a smaller size leaves a gap that looks wrong and lets a breast pad shift.
Removable pads in a stretch bra fill the gap and give a smoother line, and you can take them out if you prefer.
Why do my nursing bras gape at the cup?
Because the cup is a fixed shape and there is air in it. Structured and molded bras are designed around filling the cup, which is a problem at smaller sizes.
A stretch bra conforms instead. If a soft bra has started gaping after a few washes, the fabric has lost its recovery and technical knit holds shape longer.
My band is loose but the cup is tight. What size am I?
That is letter sizing failing your proportions: S to XL grades band and cup together in a fixed ratio, so a narrower rib cage with a slightly larger cup gets a bra that is loose everywhere.
Traditional band-and-cup sizing varies the two independently, which is as useful at the small end as at the large.
Will my size change even if I am a smaller cup?
Yes, often substantially. Breast size changes in pregnancy and again when milk comes in regardless of starting size, and plenty of people find themselves two cups up in the weeks after birth.
That is the argument for buying stretchy styles at 36 weeks and something fitted later, once your size has settled.
Does breast size affect breastfeeding?
No. Breast size has no bearing on whether you can breastfeed or on how much milk you make.
If feeding is not going well or you are worried about supply, a lactation consultant, midwife or health visitor is who can help. The bra is not the variable.
