The short answer
Buy four to six, buy them cheap, and buy pull-aside rather than clips. In the first fortnight you will be feeding lying down, in the dark, repeatedly, probably leaking, and possibly sore. Nothing about that rewards structure. What matters is that the bra opens without you being able to see what you are doing.
Why clips are the wrong answer at night
Clip-down nursing bras are excellent during the day and genuinely awkward at 3am. The clip is at the top of the strap, behind your shoulder, and working it requires either two hands or a hand you can see.
At night you have one hand, no light, and a baby that is already crying. Pull-aside crossover panels and wrap fronts solve that: you move fabric sideways and you are done. It sounds like a small distinction and it is the thing that decides which bras you actually end up wearing.
How many, honestly
Four to six. More than feels reasonable, and here is why: you will be wearing one essentially around the clock, they get leaked on, spat on and sweated in, and your laundry capacity in the first fortnight is lower than usual.
Two is the number people buy and it is not enough. Six cheap ones is a better purchase than two good ones, because the failure mode you are avoiding is having no clean bra at 2am.
We go through quantities for day bras and pumping bras in how many nursing bras you need.
The fabric question
There is a genuine trade-off here and it depends on you.
Cotton is kinder against skin that is sore or cracked, which is common in the early weeks of feeding. It also holds moisture, so if you are leaking heavily it stays damp against your skin.
Seamless synthetic dries faster and has nothing to rub, which matters when the same area is already tender. It is less pleasant against skin generally and can feel clammy.
Brushed fabric like French terry is the warmest and most comfortable, and the slowest to dry.
If you are leaking a lot, lean synthetic and use breast pads. If your skin is sore, lean cotton. Owning some of each is a reasonable answer.
Support: how little is enough?
Less than you might think, and the reason matters. A sleep bra does not need to shape or lift; its job is to hold a breast pad in place and provide a light, even containment that does not press on any one spot.
That last part is the important one. Sustained pressure on one area of breast tissue is worth avoiding, and it is why a too-tight sleep bra is worse than a loose one. If you are above a D cup and unsupported feels uncomfortable, look for the wireless bras with real band-and-cup sizing rather than tightening a letter-sized one — see nursing bras for large breasts.
When to buy
Around 36 weeks, alongside your day bras. Your rib cage has mostly finished expanding by then, so the band is close to what it will be afterwards, and buying stretchy styles means they tolerate the size swing when your milk comes in.
Do not buy these after the birth. You will need them on day one, and ordering bras from a sofa while engorged is the worst possible moment to judge fit. See when to buy nursing bras.
How we picked
Six axes, with one-handed access and comfort lying down weighted far above everything else, which is why the ranking here is almost the inverse of our day-bra comparison. Support deliberately scores low across the board, because a sleep bra that scores high on support is usually one with clips and structure — the wrong garment for this job.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.
Two things to raise with someone
Feeding should not be persistently painful, and a bra is not the fix for that — a lactation consultant, midwife or health visitor watching a feed is. ACOG and the NHS both publish guidance on breastfeeding problems worth knowing about.
Specifically: a tender lump, a red or hot patch, a painful area that does not settle, a fever or flu-like symptoms, or cracked and bleeding skin all warrant speaking to someone rather than working through. Those are common and treatable, and a different bra will not resolve any of them.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · Opening without looking
9.1/10Kindred Bravely Essentials Crossover Nursing Bra Wire Free 2 Pack

Pick 3 · Warmth and comfort in the early weeks
8.5/10Kindred Bravely French Terry Racerback Nursing and Sleep Bra
French terry is softer and warmer than seamless synthetic, which matters more than it sounds in the first fortnight when you are awake at 3am in a cold house. A racerback keeps straps out of the way when you are lying down.

Pick 4 · Cotton, in quantity
8.3/10CAKYE Maternity Nursing Sleep Bra Cotton Bralette 3 Pack

Pick 5 · A wide size range at a low price
8.1/10Motherhood Maternity Cotton Spandex Wrap Front Nursing Sleep Bralette
A wrap front, which is as easy as a crossover and marginally more adjustable, in cotton, sized S to 3X. From a dedicated maternity label, so the sizing is more predictable than most letter-sized bras.

Pick 6 · The lowest cost per bra
7.9/10Caramel Cantina Nursing Sleep Bras 4 Pack

Questions people actually ask
What is the best nursing bra to sleep in?
A pull-aside crossover or wrap-front style, because it opens without you needing to see what you are doing. Clips are fine during the day and genuinely awkward at 3am with one hand and no light.
Soft, stretchy and wireless, with enough give to tolerate your size changing overnight when your milk comes in.
How many nursing sleep bras do I need?
Four to six, which is more than people buy. You will be in one essentially around the clock, they get leaked on and sweated in, and your laundry capacity in the first fortnight is lower than usual.
Six cheap ones beats two good ones here, because the failure you are avoiding is having no clean bra at 2am.
Do I need to wear a bra to bed while nursing?
You do not have to. Most people choose to, mainly to hold a breast pad in place while leaking, which is heaviest in the first weeks.
If you do, it should be loose and even rather than tight — sustained pressure on one area of breast tissue is the thing worth avoiding.
Cotton or seamless for a sleep bra?
Cotton is kinder against sore or cracked skin and holds moisture, so it stays damp if you are leaking heavily. Seamless synthetic dries faster and has nothing to rub.
If you are leaking a lot, lean synthetic with breast pads. If your skin is sore, lean cotton. Owning some of each is reasonable.
When should I buy them?
Around 36 weeks, alongside your day bras, because your rib cage has mostly finished expanding by then and you will need them from day one.
Do not leave it until after the birth — ordering bras from a sofa while engorged is the worst moment to judge fit.
