The short answer
Buy a two-pack of labor-and-nursing gowns for the hospital, and two or three cheap nursing nightgowns for home. Hospital needs a back opening for examinations as well as front access for feeding. Home needs quantity, because everything gets leaked on. Do not spend much on either: these are garments you will ruin.
Hospital and home are different problems
Hospital
You need a gown that opens at the back for examinations and at the front for feeding, and you need more than one because the first will be ruined. Hospital-specific gowns are designed for this; ordinary nightwear is not.
If you had a caesarean, getting in and out of clothing is genuinely the sore part for the first days. A gown you step into or that opens fully beats anything you pull over your head, and the NHS caesarean recovery guidance is worth reading on movement generally.
Home
Different priorities: quantity, washability, and whether it is comfortable to wear for twenty hours. Night sweats are common in the early postpartum weeks and are a normal part of shedding pregnancy fluid, which makes breathable fabric matter more than it would otherwise.
Access methods, ranked for 3am
- Pull-aside or wrap — easiest. No fastening to find.
- Fold-down panels — nearly as easy, and more coverage.
- Clip-down straps — fine awake, fiddly half-asleep.
- Buttons — avoid for feeding. Too many, too small, too slow.
A button-front nightshirt is a perfectly nice garment and a poor nursing one. The same logic applies to bras, where pull-aside beats clips at night — see nursing sleep bras.
Built-in bra: useful or not?
Useful if you are a smaller cup size, or you want one garment instead of two, or you are managing night leaking and want a pad held in place.
Not useful if you are above a D cup, because a built-in bra provides light support only and you cannot change it independently. If the built-in bra is the wrong size, the whole gown is wrong.
A separate sleep bra under a plain nursing nightgown is more adaptable, and it is what we would suggest for larger cups.
How many, and how much to spend
Hospital: two gowns. One will be ruined, and you do not want to be wearing a hospital-issue one for three days by default.
Home: two or three, plus whatever ordinary soft clothes you already own. Many people end up living in a large t-shirt and a nursing bra rather than nightgowns, and that is a perfectly good answer.
Spend: little. These get leaked on, bled on, spat on and washed constantly, and the ones that survive six months are not the ones you will still want.
What goes with them
A nightgown is one part of a hospital bag that works. The others are mesh or disposable underwear, maternity pads and a peri bottle — and of those the peri bottle is the one people are most surprised by how much they needed.
If you would rather buy it as one order, recovery kits bundle most of it.
How we picked
Six axes: feeding access, hospital practicality, length and coverage, whether it survives washing, comfort for round-the-clock wear, and value per wear. Access and hospital practicality are weighted hardest, because this garment has two specific jobs and ordinary nightwear already covers the comfort one.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · The hospital bag
8.9/10Ekouaer 3 in 1 Labor Delivery Hospital Gown Nursing Nightgown
The hospital-bag answer: a gown with a back opening for labor and examinations plus nursing access at the front, in a two-pack so one can be ruined. That dual function is specifically what a hospital stay needs and ordinary nightwear does not provide.

Pick 2 · Not wearing a separate bra at night
8.7/10iloveSIA Nursing Gowns with Built-in Nursing Bra 3 Pack
A built-in nursing bra removes a garment and a decision, which matters at 3am. Three in a pack is the right quantity for something you will be wearing and washing constantly. The honest limit is that a built-in bra provides light support only.
- Built-in bra
- Yes
- Pack
- 3
- Access
- Fold-down nursing panels
- Use
- Hospital and home
What works
- Built-in bra — one garment instead of two

- Fold-down nursing panels
- Works at home and in hospital
What it gives up
- Built-in support is light
- Cannot change the bra independently of the gown
- If the bra size is wrong, the whole gown is wrong
- Thin fabric
Skip it ifyou are above a D cup and need real support.

Pick 3 · Warm bedrooms, and summer
8.4/10SUIEK Nursing Nightgown Maternity Tank Dresses 3 Pack
Sleeveless, which matters because postpartum night sweats are common and a long-sleeved gown becomes unbearable. Clip-down straps and three in a pack. The practical choice for a warm house or a summer birth.

- Pack
- 3
- Access
- Clip-down straps
- Use
- Warm bedrooms

- Sleeveless — genuinely better with night sweats
- Clip-down straps

Pick 4 · Built-in pads, for leaking
8.2/10Sosolism Maternity Nursing Nightgown with Built-in Pads
A built-in bra with pads, which addresses the specific early-weeks problem of leaking overnight: a gown that holds a pad in place means you wake up less wet. Bamboo options are noticeably more breathable than the synthetic alternatives.
- Built-in bra
- Yes, with pads
- Size range
- S to XXL
- Access
- Nursing panels
- Fabric
- Soft knit, bamboo option
What works
- Built-in bra with pads holds a breast pad in place
- S to XXL range
- Bamboo option for breathability
- Nursing panels
What it gives up
- Light support
- Built-in pads bunch in the wash
- Cannot adjust the bra separately
- Mid-range fabric
Skip it ifyou prefer to manage pads separately.

Pick 5 · Something you would wear in front of visitors
8.0/10Motherhood Maternity Lace Trim Clip Down Nursing Nightgown
The one here that does not look like hospital kit, which is a legitimate thing to want when people are visiting and you have been in the same gown for three days. Clip-down access, lounge-dress length, from a dedicated maternity label.
- Access
- Clip-down
- Length
- Nightgown and lounge dress
- Brand
- Dedicated maternity label
- Detail
- Lace trim
What works
- Looks like a nightdress rather than medical wear
- Lounge length, so it works out of bed
- Clip-down access
- Consistent maternity-label sizing
What it gives up
- Single garment, not a multi-pack
- Lace trim can irritate sore skin
- Higher price per piece
- Clips at night
Skip it ifyou want several cheap gowns you do not mind ruining.

Pick 6 · Having something to put on over the top
7.8/10SUNNYBUY Nursing Nightgown and Maternity Robe Set
The robe is the useful part. In hospital and in the first weeks at home you will repeatedly need to be slightly more covered at short notice, and having a matching layer by the bed is more practical than it sounds.
- Pieces
- Gown plus matching robe
- Access
- Nursing panels
- Use
- Hospital and recovery
- Fabric
- Soft knit
What works
- Robe means you can cover up quickly
- Matching set, so it looks deliberate
- Nursing access on the gown
- Useful for visitors and corridors
What it gives up
- Two garments to wash
- Robe is an extra layer in a warm room
- Single set rather than a pack
- Mid-range fabric
Skip it ifyou already own a dressing gown.

Questions people actually ask
What should I wear in hospital after giving birth?
A gown that opens at the back for examinations and at the front for feeding, and at least two of them, because the first will be ruined.
If you had a caesarean, something you step into or that opens fully is much easier than anything you pull over your head.
Do I need a nursing nightgown with a built-in bra?
Useful if you are a smaller cup size, want one garment instead of two, or want a pad held in place overnight.
Less useful above a D cup, because a built-in bra gives light support only and you cannot change it independently. A separate sleep bra under a plain gown is more adaptable.
How many nursing nightgowns do I need?
Two for hospital and two or three for home, plus whatever soft clothes you already own.
Many people end up living in a large t-shirt and a nursing bra rather than nightgowns, which is a perfectly good answer.
Are button-front nightshirts good for nursing?
They are nice garments and poor nursing ones. Buttons are too many, too small and too slow at 3am with one hand.
Pull-aside, wrap and fold-down panels are all much easier. Clips are fine awake and fiddly half-asleep.
Why am I sweating so much at night after birth?
Postpartum night sweats are common and are part of shedding the extra fluid pregnancy added. They usually settle over the first couple of weeks.
Breathable fabric and sleeveless styles help considerably. Night sweats with a fever, shivering or feeling unwell are different and need contacting your provider.
