This is general information, not medical advice. Talk to your midwife, OB or GP about your own symptoms. Severe or sudden pain, bleeding, a fever, or regular contractions before 37 weeks need a call to your provider now — before you buy anything.

The short answer
Nothing with a waistband, everything that opens at the front, and keep wearing your maternity clothes. That last one is the piece of advice people most need and least expect: you will look roughly six months pregnant for a while, and that is normal rather than a problem to solve with a purchase.
Keep your maternity clothes
Do not pack them away at the hospital. This is the single most useful thing on this page.
NHS guidance on your body after pregnancy and March of Dimes's material on the body after a baby both describe the uterus taking around six weeks to return to its pre-pregnancy size, with the abdominal wall taking longer. The practical result is that for the first weeks, maternity clothes fit and your old clothes do not.
Maternity leggings in particular are better postpartum clothing than most postpartum clothing: the panel is soft and high, so nothing presses on a healing abdomen or sits on an incision, and they accommodate a size that is changing week to week.
The two rules
No waistband. Nothing sitting at the level of a caesarean incision, and nothing digging into a midsection that is still tender and changing. That rules out most trousers and makes dresses, gowns and over-belly leggings the practical options.
Front access. If you are feeding, anything that has to come off over your head is a problem at 3am with a baby in one arm. Button-fronts, wrap tops, drop-down tanks and nursing panels all work; a crew-neck jumper does not.
Everything else is preference.
What to actually buy, in order
- Two or three nursing tanks. The cheapest useful thing, layers under anything, solves the top half of every outfit.
- One set of nursing pajamas with a robe. The fourth trimester uniform, and the robe is what makes it answerable-door respectable.
- Your maternity leggings. Already owned. Keep them out.
- Five or six pairs of high-waisted cotton underwear. See postpartum underwear.
- Two nursing bras in a stretchy wireless style. Your size moves in the first fortnight, so buy few and stretchy. See nursing bras.
- One knit dress, if you want to feel dressed. No waistband, looks deliberate.
That is six items, most of which you may already own. The impulse to buy a postpartum wardrobe is understandable and usually a mistake, because your size changes under it.
For the hospital
A gown rather than pajamas, for a reason that is not obvious: nothing sits on your abdomen, which after a caesarean is worth a great deal, and it is far easier to get on and off when movement hurts. ACOG's material on caesarean birth and the NHS's recovery guidance both describe how limited movement is in the first days.
Add a robe, dark and loose. Hospital corridors and unexpected visitors are both more manageable with one.
After a caesarean
The waistband rule stops being a preference and becomes the only rule. A low transverse incision sits exactly where most trousers do.
Gowns and dresses first, then over-belly maternity leggings, then high-waisted things that clear the incision. Nothing firm over the incision until it is fully healed and your own team is happy. See c-section recovery products.
Dark colors, and more of them
Practical rather than aesthetic. In the first weeks there is leaking — from you, from the baby, from your milk if you are feeding — and light colors show all of it.
Buy multipacks of the things that need washing most, because the laundry situation with a newborn is worse than people expect and having five of something cheap beats having one of something good.
How we picked
Six axes: waistband pressure, feeding access, whether it works at home and out, whether it fits a changing size, fabric comfort and value. Items with no feeding access score badly on that axis even when they are excellent clothes — the dress and the leggings both do — because a single rubric should show that rather than quietly excusing it.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not used these. The method is on how we pick.
A note on the size question
If the not-fitting is upsetting rather than merely inconvenient, that is worth saying out loud to someone. MedlinePlus has material on weight after pregnancy, and ACOG has material on postpartum depression, which affects a great many people and is treatable.
Contact your provider for persistent low mood, anxiety, feeling unable to cope, or thoughts of harming yourself or your baby — at any point in the first year, not just the first weeks. Also for a fever, heavy bleeding, a wound that is hot or increasingly painful, severe one-sided calf pain, chest pain or breathlessness, or a severe headache with visual changes.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.

Pick 2 · Hospital, and the first week
8.6/10SUNNYBUY Nursing Nightgown and Maternity Robe Set
The right thing for the hospital and the first week home, for a specific reason: a gown means nothing at all sits on your abdomen, which after a caesarean is worth more than it sounds. The matching robe covers the walking-the-corridor problem.

Pick 3 · Leaving the house in cold weather
8.4/10G4Free BareFeel Fleece Lined Maternity Leggings with Pockets
Maternity leggings, worn postpartum, which is the single most useful piece of advice on this page. The over-belly panel is soft and high, so nothing presses on a healing abdomen, and it fits a size that is still changing. Pockets, which matter when your hands are full.

- Lining
- Fleece
- Pockets
- Side pockets
- Season
- Winter
What works
- Soft high panel — nothing on an incision
- Fits a changing size without buying again
- Pockets
- Cheap, and warm
What it gives up
- Maternity panel can look slack once the bump has gone
- Fleece is too warm most of the year
- No support at all

Pick 4 · Looking like yourself, with no waistband
8.2/10guruixu Crewneck Maternity Sweater Dress Rib Knit
The answer to wanting to look like a person again without anything touching your middle. A knit dress has no waistband to negotiate, takes a changing size without comment, and reads as a dress rather than as recovery wear.
- Fabric
- Rib knit sweater
- Extras
- Belt included
- Length
- Long, with a slit
- Season
- Cold weather
What works
- No waistband at all
- Looks deliberate rather than like loungewear
- Rib knit accommodates a changing size
- Warm enough for cold weather
What it gives up
- No feeding access — needs a nursing bra and layering
- Rib knit clings, which some people will not want yet
- Cold-weather only
- Belt is best left off
Skip it ifyou need front-opening feeding access.

Pick 5 · Layering, and the one you will re-wear most
8.3/10Ekouaer Maternity Tank Tops Ribbed 4 Pack
The quiet workhorse. A multipack of nursing tanks with drop-down access layers under everything, survives the laundry cycle a newborn creates, and means the top half of your outfit is solved regardless of what the bottom half is doing.
- Pack
- 4
- Fabric
- Ribbed stretch knit
- Length
- Long, covers the bump
- Use
- Layering and summer
What works
- Multipack — survives the actual laundry situation
- Drop-down access under any top
- Layers under a cardigan or a jacket
- Cheapest useful thing here
What it gives up
- Built-in shelf is not enough support for a larger bust
- Thin fabric
- Stretches out over time
- Not a complete outfit
Skip it ifyou need real bust support — wear a nursing bra underneath.

Pick 6 · Later on, when you want structure
8.0/10AKARA Postpartum Tummy Control Leggings No Roll Down
The later purchase, and worth separating from the rest of this page. Once soft and loose has stopped being what you want, a high three-tier waistband that does not roll is what makes getting dressed feel normal again. Not a first-fortnight item.
- Waistband
- Three-tier high waist, does not roll down
- Pockets
- Two
- Use
- Everyday postpartum
- Rise
- Very high
What works
- Does not roll down, unlike almost everything
- High enough to clear a healed incision
- Pockets
- Looks like ordinary clothing
What it gives up
- Firm — the wrong feel for the first weeks
- No feeding access
- Warm in summer
- Wait until an incision is fully healed
Skip it ifyou are in the first two weeks, or an incision is not healed.

| Feeding access | 3.0 |
| Works at home and out | 9.4 |

Questions people actually ask
What clothes should I wear postpartum?
Nothing with a waistband, and anything that opens at the front if you are feeding. That makes dresses, gowns, over-belly leggings and drop-down nursing tanks the practical options.
And keep wearing your maternity clothes. You will look roughly six months pregnant for a while, and that is normal rather than a problem to solve with a purchase.
Can I wear maternity clothes after birth?
Yes, and you should — do not pack them away at the hospital. The uterus takes around six weeks to return to its pre-pregnancy size and the abdominal wall takes longer.
Maternity leggings in particular are better postpartum clothing than most postpartum clothing, because the panel is soft and high so nothing presses on a healing abdomen.
What should I wear in hospital after giving birth?
A gown rather than pajamas, because nothing sits on your abdomen and it is far easier to get on and off when movement hurts. That matters most after a caesarean.
Add a robe, dark and loose. Hospital corridors and unexpected visitors are both more manageable with one.
What should I wear after a c-section?
Nothing with a waistband at incision height, which is exactly where most trousers sit. Gowns and dresses first, then over-belly maternity leggings, then high-waisted things that clear the incision.
Nothing firm over the incision until it is fully healed and your own team is happy.
How many postpartum clothes do I need?
Fewer than you think: two or three nursing tanks, one set of nursing pajamas with a robe, your existing maternity leggings, high-waisted cotton underwear, two stretchy nursing bras, and one knit dress if you want to feel dressed.
Buying a whole postpartum wardrobe is usually a mistake, because your size changes under it.
Why do I still look pregnant after giving birth?
Because the uterus takes around six weeks to return to its pre-pregnancy size and the abdominal wall takes longer. Looking several months pregnant for a while is the ordinary course of things.
If that is upsetting rather than merely inconvenient, it is worth saying out loud to someone — postpartum depression affects a great many people and is treatable.
