How many nursing bras do you need?
Think in three buckets, not one number.
- Sleep bras: 4-6. Worn almost around the clock early on, washed constantly. Buy cheap, buy several.
- Day bras with real support: 2-3. Only worn for the hours you are out of the house.
- Pumping bras: 0-2. Two if you pump at work or daily, one if occasionally, none if not at all.
That ratio is the opposite of what most people buy, and the reason is laundry rather than preference.
Why more sleep bras than day bras
This is the thing worth internalizing, because it is counter-intuitive and it is where people most often get the quantities wrong.
In the first fortnight you will be wearing a bra essentially continuously — day and night, because you are feeding at all hours. That one bra gets leaked on, spat on, sweated in, and occasionally worse. Postpartum night sweats are common, which adds to it.
Meanwhile your laundry capacity is lower than usual, because you are exhausted and washing a great deal of other things. Two bras in that situation means washing daily and sometimes having nothing clean at 2am.
Day bras, by contrast, are worn for the few hours you leave the house, which early on is not many. Two or three is genuinely enough.
The quantities, by situation
| Situation | Sleep bras | Day bras | Pumping bras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breastfeeding, at home | 4-6 | 2 | 0-1 |
| Breastfeeding, back at work | 4 | 3 | 2 |
| Exclusively pumping | 3-4 | 2 | 2-3 |
| Mixed feeding | 4 | 2 | 1-2 |
| Not breastfeeding | 2-3 | 2 | 0 |
| Above a D cup, any of the above | 4-6 | 2-3 | As above |
At a larger cup size the sleep-bra number stays high and the day-bra number does not rise, because good larger-cup day bras are expensive and two or three is still enough. What changes is that the sleep bras need to be the engineered wireless kind rather than plain bralettes. See nursing bras for large breasts.
How many for the hospital bag?
Two sleep bras. That is it. You will be there for a day or three, you will be in a nightgown most of the time, and the hospital has laundry problems of its own.
Pack them already washed and already comfortable, not new and stiff. And pack breast pads, which matter more than a third bra.
Do not buy them all at once
This is the other half of the quantity question. Your size moves twice: when your milk comes in, usually day two to five, and again as things settle over about six weeks.
So buy the sleep bras and one or two day bras at 36 weeks, then buy more day bras at around six weeks postpartum once you know your settled size. Buying six day bras before the birth is how people end up with six bras that do not fit. See when to buy nursing bras.
When to buy more
- If you are washing bras daily, buy two more sleep bras. That is the signal, and it is cheap to fix.
- When you go back to work, add a day bra and two pumping bras.
- At around six weeks postpartum, replace or add day bras in your settled size.
- If a bra feels tight in one spot, replace it rather than tolerating it — sustained pressure on breast tissue is worth avoiding.
What else to buy in quantity
Two things people reliably under-buy:
Breast pads. Leaking is heaviest in the first weeks and a box goes faster than you expect. Disposable for the early weeks, washable later if you want.
Nursing nightgowns or soft tops. Two or three, for the same laundry reason as the bras. See nursing nightgowns.
How we picked
The picks on this page are chosen for quantity rather than quality: multi-packs that get you to the right number in one purchase. The individual comparisons are in best nursing bras and best nursing sleep bras.
We read the current listings and the reported experience; we have not worn these. The method is on how we pick.

Questions people actually ask
How many nursing bras do I need?
Think in three buckets: four to six sleep bras, two or three day bras with real support, and zero to two pumping bras depending on whether you pump.
That ratio is the opposite of what most people buy, and the reason is laundry — sleep bras are worn almost continuously while day bras are only worn for the hours you are out.
How many nursing bras should I pack in a hospital bag?
Two sleep bras. You will be there for a day or three and in a nightgown most of the time.
Pack them already washed rather than new and stiff, and pack breast pads, which matter more than a third bra.
How many nursing bras do you need postpartum?
Four to six for sleep and two or three for daytime, with the sleep bras doing most of the work in the first fortnight.
If you find yourself washing bras daily, buy two more sleep bras — that is the signal, and it is cheap to fix.
Should I buy them all before the birth?
No. Buy the sleep bras and one or two day bras at 36 weeks, then buy more day bras at around six weeks postpartum once your size has settled.
Your size moves twice: when your milk comes in, and again as things settle. Six day bras bought before the birth is how people end up with six that do not fit.
How many pumping bras do I need?
Two if you pump at work or daily, because they get milk on them and need washing more often than ordinary bras. One if you pump occasionally.
If you are exclusively pumping, two or three, and a dedicated pumping bra rather than a combination one.
What do people under-buy?
Breast pads and sleep bras, consistently. Leaking is heaviest in the first weeks and a box of pads goes faster than expected.
Also soft nursing tops or nightgowns — two or three, for the same laundry reason as the bras.
