The short answer
If you are buying one maternity dress, buy a rib knit nursing dress in a dark neutral. It is the only purchase here that keeps earning after the birth, and rib knit is the one fabric that recovers instead of stretching out. If you need a dress for a specific event rather than for daily life, buy the wrap maxi — a tie that moves as you grow beats any fixed waist. If you are not sure dresses are for you at all, the stretch tank dress costs a fraction of the others and will tell you within a week.
Why a dress is the easiest thing to wear pregnant
Almost every clothing problem in pregnancy is a waistband problem. Jeans dig in, leggings roll down, work trousers need a panel that shows through everything, and the thing you bought at 18 weeks is unwearable at 30. A dress removes the waistband from the outfit entirely. There is nothing to sit on your bump, nothing to roll, and nothing that has to be re-bought when your measurements move again.
That is also why a dress is the most common first maternity purchase and the most common disappointment. A dress with no waistband still has to handle three things that change at different rates: a bust that grows first, a bump that grows last, and the swelling that MedlinePlus lists among the ordinary symptoms of later pregnancy. The dresses that fail do so because they were drafted for one of those and not the other two.
The three ways a maternity dress fails
It stretches instead of expanding. A flat jersey tube does accommodate a bump — by thinning across the widest point until it goes semi-sheer and pulls horizontally. Ruching, shirring and rib knit all solve this the same way: they hold spare fabric in reserve and pay it out as you grow. That is the single most important thing to look for on a listing photograph, and it is visible in the side seam.
The hem climbs. A bump takes length from the front of a dress, so a mini becomes very short and a midi becomes a mini. This is the reason a dress that fit at 22 weeks is unwearable at 34 even though it still fastens. Buy longer than you think you need, especially in anything fitted.
It is too hot. Pregnancy raises your baseline temperature and the ACOG guidance on skin changes is a reminder of how much is going on at the surface. A thick knit that felt cozy in the store is unbearable in a heated office by week 30. If you are pregnant through summer, our guide to what to wear when pregnant in summer goes through the fabrics that actually help.
Shapes, decided by what you need the dress to do
- Wrap — a tie that moves as you grow, some feeding access built into the shape, and the most forgiving option on a swollen day. Gapes at the neckline on a fuller bust.
- Ruched or side-gathered — the everyday workhorse. The seam releases fabric as the bump grows, which is why these still fit in month eight.
- Smocked or shirred bodice — elastic in the fabric rather than at one seam. The best shape for a summer pregnancy and the worst for a structured dress code.
- Rib knit bodycon — stretches in two directions and recovers. The shape to buy if you want the bump shown rather than skimmed.
- Sweater and knit dresses — the only warm option that is not a sweatshirt. Cheap knits pill fast, so judge them as a one-season garment.
If the dress is specifically for the office, the rules are different enough that we split it out: see the best maternity dresses for work, and the wider roundup of maternity work clothes.
How we picked
We started from the criteria, not the products. A maternity dress earns its place if it grows with the bump through a real stretch of pregnancy, is comfortable to sit in for a full day, can be dressed up or down, is made of something that survives washing, works for more than one season, and — the axis most roundups ignore — is still wearable after the birth. Every pick above is scored against those six.
Then we read the current listings in this category and kept only products that are on sale right now, with the brand and model confirmed against a live listing. We have not worn any of these. What we can tell you is the construction: where the stretch comes from, how the fabric behaves, what the neckline will do on a changed bust, and the failure patterns buyers report again and again. Our method is written out in full on how we pick.
The buying guide
Buy your pre-pregnancy size, with one exception
Maternity sizing is drafted to your usual size with the bump added, so sizing up is the most common and most expensive mistake — it gives you a dress that is loose at the shoulder and the armhole forever, which is the part that never grows. The exception is a short or fitted hem: if you are tall, or buying a mini, go up for length rather than for width. The same logic drives our maternity jeans sizing guide, and it applies to dresses just as reliably.
Check where the stretch is before you check the print
On the listing photos, look at the side seam. Visible gathering means the dress has fabric held in reserve. A flat seam means the dress is relying on the fabric itself to stretch, which is fine in rib knit and bad in thin jersey. This one check predicts more about month eight than any size chart.
Decide on nursing access now, not later
A nursing opening typically adds to the price and occasionally to the bulk of a neckline. It also roughly doubles the useful life of the dress. If you plan to breastfeed, buying one nursing dress and one plain dress beats buying two plain ones. If you are not sure yet, our page on maternity bras versus nursing bras covers the same decision for the layer underneath.
Think in cost per wear, not price
A dress you wear twice a week for four months and then for six months of feeding is doing a different job from one bought for a single event. The expensive pick here is the cheapest of the lot on that measure, and the cheapest pick is only good value if you genuinely wear it through a summer. Neither is the right answer for everyone.
Swelling changes what fits, late on
Ankles, feet and fingers swell in the third trimester, and the NHS guidance on swelling is a good reminder that this is normal rather than a sizing failure. A dress is the most swelling-tolerant garment you own, because nothing on it is fastened to a measurement. Loose below the bust beats fitted everywhere once this starts.
When a dress is the wrong answer
If you are on your feet all day in a job with a uniform or a dress code, a dress is usually the worse option — look at maternity scrubs or maternity pants instead. If you are still early and not ready to tell anyone, a dress draws attention to the bump by definition; our guide to work clothes that hide the bump has better options. And if the problem is not clothing at all but pain when you stand or walk, no dress fixes that — start with pregnancy back pain relief.
Finally, if you are shopping specifically for a maternity shoot rather than for daily life, the fabrics and shapes that photograph well are not the ones that wear well. We have a separate roundup of maternity photoshoot dresses for that.
Every pick, in detail
Scores below are ours. They come from the published specification sheets and from the patterns in what buyers consistently report — not from wearing these ourselves.
Top pick · One dress that spans pregnancy and feeding
9.0/10Kindred Bravely Essentials Ribbed Maternity Nursing Dress
The most useful single dress in this category, because it is the one you do not have to replace in January. Rib knit stretches in both directions and recovers, so it reads fitted at 20 weeks and still fits at 38 without hanging like a sack in between, and the nursing opening means it keeps working through the months when nothing else in your closet does. Kindred Bravely is a maternity-only label, which shows up in the places that usually fail: the armhole, the neckline and the hem length.
- Fabric
- Rib knit
- Access
- Nursing-friendly opening
- Span
- Maternity through breastfeeding
- Use
- Everyday, dressed up or down
What works
- Rib knit recovers instead of stretching permanently out of shape
- Nursing access means it is still in rotation months after the birth
- Cut by a maternity-only label, so the proportions are drafted for a bump
- Plain enough to dress up with a jacket or down with sneakers
What it gives up
- The highest price of anything here, and it feels like it on the order page
- Rib knit is close-fitting by design, which is not what everyone wants on a bad day
- Limited color range compared with the fast-fashion options
- One dress at this price buys three of the cheaper ones
Skip it ifyou want the bump hidden rather than shown, or you are not planning to breastfeed and would rather spend less.

Pick 2 · Events, showers and anything with a photographer
8.8/10OUGES Wrap Pregnancy Maxi V Neck Maternity Dress
The wrap is the most forgiving shape in maternity clothing, and this is the cleanest cheap version of it. The tie sits above the bump and you reposition it as you grow, so one dress covers a wide stretch of pregnancy without ever looking like it is straining. It is also the only shape here that works when you are swollen, because nothing on it is fixed to a measurement.
- Length
- Maxi
- Neck
- Wrap V-neck
- Shape
- Wrap front, tie waist
- Use
- Baby shower, events, work
What works
- The tie waist adjusts as the bump grows, rather than stretching to keep up
- Maxi length flatters a bump without clinging to anything below it
- Dressy enough for a shower or a wedding without being a one-wear purchase
- Wrap front gives some feeding access without being sold as a nursing dress
What it gives up
- Wrap necklines gape on a fuller bust unless you pin or re-tie them
- Floor length is a trip hazard on stairs in the third trimester
- Fabric is lighter than the price suggests, so a slip underneath helps
- Ties loosen over a long day and need resetting
Skip it ifyou are short — a maxi on a shorter frame will pool at the hem and need taking up.

Pick 3 · The dress you reach for without thinking
8.7/10Smallshow Short Sleeve Maternity Dress Ruched
Side ruching is the quiet workhorse of maternity design: the gathered seam pays out as the bump grows instead of the whole dress stretching thin across it. Short sleeves put it under a cardigan or a blazer in either direction, and jersey is the fabric that survives being sat in for eight hours. If you want one dress that does not announce itself, this is it.
- Detail
- Side ruching that grows with the bump
- Sleeve
- Short
- Use
- Work and events
- Fabric
- Stretch jersey
What works
- Side ruching expands with real growth rather than flattening out
- Jersey sits comfortably through a full working day
- Layers under a blazer or cardigan in either direction
- Reads as a normal dress rather than obviously maternity
What it gives up
- Jersey picks up lint and shows every stray hair
- Short sleeves need a layer for most of fall and winter
- No nursing access, so it stops earning after the birth
- Thinner panels can go slightly sheer when fully stretched
Skip it ifyou want something that carries into breastfeeding — buy the rib knit nursing dress instead.

Pick 4 · Showing the bump rather than draping over it
8.4/10OYOANGLE Maternity Mock Neck Sleeveless Ruched Bodycon Maxi Dress
A bodycon maxi is the shape people buy when they have decided to stop hiding, and the ruched side seam is what stops it becoming a tube that pulls. Sleeveless and high-necked at once is an unusual combination and a useful one: it stays cool, and it still looks deliberate in photos. This is the everyday dress that doubles as the one you wear for the bump pictures.
- Length
- Maxi
- Fit
- Bodycon, ruched side seam
- Sleeve
- Sleeveless
- Use
- Bump-showing events and photos
What works
- Ruched seam keeps the fit clean as the bump changes shape
- Mock neck with no sleeves is cooler than it looks
- Photographs well, so it earns a second use at a shoot or a shower
- Long enough to wear with flats without looking casual
What it gives up
- Close-fitting everywhere, which shows every underwear line
- No sleeves means a layer for most of the year in a cold climate
- Bodycon fabric is unforgiving on a day with swelling
- No feeding access at all
Skip it ifyou would rather skim the bump than trace it — the wrap maxi is the same occasion, drawn loosely.

Pick 5 · Hot weather and swelling
8.2/10BeautyNee Short Puff Sleeve Maternity Dress Square Neck Ruffle Hem Smocked
Smocking is elastic shirring, which means the bodice expands and contracts rather than fitting one measurement, and that is exactly what you want in a summer pregnancy when your rib cage, your bust and your ankles are all changing at different rates. The puff sleeve and ruffle hem are doing style work, but the shirred panel is doing the real work.
- Neck
- Square
- Sleeve
- Short puff
- Detail
- Smocked bodice, ruffle hem
- Season
- Warm weather
What works
- Shirred bodice stretches and recovers rather than sizing to one measurement
- Square neck clears a bust that is already changing
- Loose below the bust, which is the right shape on a swollen day
- Light enough to be the only layer in high summer
What it gives up
- Shirring is warm against the skin where it bunches
- Puff sleeves catch on bags and car seat belts
- Thin enough that a nude slip is usually needed
- A distinctly summer dress — it will sit unused for half the year
Skip it ifyou are shopping for fall and winter, or your office dress code rules out ruffles.

Pick 6 · Cold-weather events you still have to attend
8.1/10Chang Yun Maternity Nursing Sweater Dress
The gap in most maternity closets is a warm dress that is not a sweatshirt, and this is the cheapest honest answer to it. Knit drapes over a bump without needing a panel, the nursing opening keeps it useful afterwards, and a sweater dress is the one winter shape that reads as an outfit rather than as a layer. Knitwear at this price is not built to last years, and it does not need to.
- Fabric
- Knit sweater
- Access
- Nursing opening
- Use
- Wedding guest, baby shower, photos
- Season
- Fall and winter
What works
- Warm without a separate layer, which no other dress here manages
- Nursing opening extends its life past the birth
- Knit drapes over a growing bump instead of pulling across it
- Dressy enough for a winter shower or a family dinner
What it gives up
- Inexpensive knits pill at the underarm and the seat within a season
- Heavier to wash and slow to dry
- Too warm for a heated office
- Knit stretches out through a long day and needs a cool wash to recover
Skip it ifyou run hot in pregnancy, which most people do — a layered jersey dress will be more comfortable.

Pick 7 · Winter days with boots and tights
7.9/10Langwyqu Maternity Sweater Dress Turtleneck Knit
A mini knit dress is the lowest-effort cold-weather outfit in pregnancy: pull it on, add thick tights and boots, and the whole question of waistbands never comes up. The turtleneck does the styling so you do not have to. The trade is length, which gets shorter as the bump rises, so size up if you are between sizes and plan on tights.
- Neck
- Turtleneck
- Fabric
- Knit
- Length
- Mini
- Season
- Fall and winter
What works
- Genuinely one-piece dressing on a cold morning
- Turtleneck looks considered with no further effort
- Knit accommodates the bump without a panel or ruching
- Works over leggings if the length stops being enough
What it gives up
- A mini rides up as the bump grows, which is the known failure of this shape
- No feeding access
- Knit at this price pills with regular wear
- Needs tights or leggings for most of the season it is designed for
Skip it ifyou are already in the third trimester — buy a midi or a maxi, because the hem will keep climbing.

Pick 8 · Finding out whether you like the shape, cheaply
7.6/10Rnxrbb Summer Bodycon Maternity Dress Pregnancy Tank
The least expensive way to own a maternity dress at all, and a sensible way to test whether you are a bodycon-and-sneakers person before spending real money on the idea. Stretch tank dresses are simple garments, so there is less to get wrong at a low price than there is in a tailored one, and the size range runs further than most of this category.
- Fit
- Bodycon
- Sleeve
- Tank
- Sizes
- S to 2XL
- Season
- Summer
What works
- Cheapest route into the category by a wide margin
- Stretch tank shape has very little that can fit badly
- Size range goes to 2XL, which much of this category does not
- Easy to wash and quick to dry, so it can be a twice-a-week dress
What it gives up
- Thin fabric is close to sheer when stretched over a full bump
- Bodycon with no ruching pulls horizontally at the widest point
- Does not hold shape through many washes
- No layering built in, so it is a summer-only purchase
Skip it ifyou want one dress to last the whole pregnancy — this is a stopgap, not a staple.

Questions people actually ask
What size maternity dress should I buy?
Your pre-pregnancy size. Maternity clothing is cut to your normal measurements with the bump already added, so sizing up produces a dress that is permanently loose at the shoulders and armholes, which never grow.
The exception is length. If you are tall or buying anything short or fitted, go up a size for the hem rather than for the width, because a bump shortens the front of a dress as it grows.
When should I start buying maternity dresses?
Most people need them somewhere between 14 and 20 weeks, and a dress is often the first maternity purchase that actually gets worn because it removes the waistband problem instead of working around it.
If you only want to buy once, wait until your regular clothes genuinely stop fastening and then buy a shape with ruching or rib knit, which will take you much further than a flat jersey dress.
Can I wear a regular dress instead?
Early on, yes. A wrap dress, an empire line or anything shirred above the bust will often last into the second trimester without being maternity at all.
What fails is length and side seams. A regular dress rides up at the front as the bump grows and pulls across the widest point, so by the third trimester most non-maternity dresses look and feel like the wrong size even when they still fasten.
Are nursing dresses worth the extra cost?
If you intend to breastfeed, usually yes, because the dress stays in rotation for months after the birth rather than being packed away. That changes the cost per wear more than any discount does.
If you are not planning to breastfeed, or you mostly wear separates at home, the nursing opening is paying for something you will not use.
How many maternity dresses do I need?
Two is enough for most people: one everyday dress in a dark neutral and one that can be dressed up for an event. Add a third only if you are dressing for an office five days a week.
Buying more than that early is the common mistake, because your shape changes enough between the second and third trimester that some of what you bought will not be worn.
Do maternity dresses still fit after birth?
Loose and ruched shapes usually do, and many people wear them for the first weeks because the postpartum belly is still soft and anything with a waistband is uncomfortable.
Fitted bodycon shapes tend not to, and dresses without feeding access get packed away quickly if you are breastfeeding. If you want the dress to last, that is the feature to buy.
